personal correspondence from my father
My mother was 4th in the family. She had rugged good health most of her life, but she had a nearly fatal case of typhoid fever when she was 14 which left her hearing impaired for life. She was left with partially crippled hands - she could neither fully open or close them - in an accident in which they were burned. Nevertheless, she became a competent stenographer & typist, worked for a law firm, and did court recording. I knew her as a very capable and intelligent person even though she never went to high school. She certainly was my father's greatest help - his alter ego.
