Zeta Chapter of Illinois

In Self-trust all the virtues are comprehended. Free should the scholar be—free and brave.
--Ralph Waldo Emerson: The American Scholar, 1837
Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization. For more than 200 years the Society has pursued its mission of fostering and to recognizing excellence in the liberal arts and sciences, especially at the baccalaureate level. Members must have excelled at a broad range of undergraduate courses in the arts and sciences offered at one of the 255 colleges and universities in the United States that are sufficiently rigorous and intellectually challenging to shelter a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Members have shown a devotion to intellectual pursuits and the objectives of a liberal education.

The Society’s flagship publication, The American Scholar, is an intellectual quarterly that has been published for general circulation since 1932. The journal now occupies a singular place in contemporary American letters. Readers may anticipate a balanced selection of articles and essays on literary, artistic, and scientific subjects; regular features include memoirs, commentary, and poetry.
