About Augustana
Crew
History:
Originating from the dream of a first-year student in the Fall of 1998, Justin List, brought Crew to the Augustana campus. Never before rowing in his life, List was always curious about rowing. After contacting the Quad City Rowing Association, the rest is history. When March rolled around the newly formed team of 20+ practices on the river five times a week starting at 5:45am. Why do we do it ... Why not!

When asked
a few questions - Here is how the Team responded:
Why do
you Row?
"I don't row, I cox. This question is biased. And I cox because I never shut up when I row, so it only made sense to take the position where it's ok to talk a lot. And also because "cox" makes me giggle. And I get to say Cox-Box a lot." - Bryan Poole
"It's a great activity and it keeps me in shape." - Lynette Bisanz
"I love the full body excercise and the challenge!" - Joanna Link
Why do
you get up at 5:15 am in the morning?
"Because it is an amazing thing to see the moon and the sun up at the same time. Also because I love to row
." - Ann Janowski
"I get up because rowing is such a great way to start the day! You gotta be a lil' crazy sometimes!" - Joanna Link
"I like the feeling of accomplishment when I get home and need to shower already because I had such a good workout while the people who live around me are still fast asleep." -Amanda Vandermeer
What got
you interested in Crew?
"I went to the activities fair and talked to some people and thought i would try it." - Lynette Bisanz
"A few of my friends row, and they said it is a ton of fun. " - Ann Janowski
"I have always wanted to join a sport but I cannot run. I figured college was a good time to try something new. I knew I would enver get the chance to try this again!" - Amanda Vandermeer
What do you like best about Crew?
"I love getting to know so many different and interesting people and bonding with them in a way that only rowers can identify with. It's like a big club filled with crazy and fun nuts who don't mind getting up before the sun or most of the civilized world. It's cool how the river and the shell unite us so that we have to really and truly act as a team in order to accomplish our goals. I think it is one of the only sports with which the term "team work" can be accurately defined." - Bryan Poole
"Its an adreniline rush. the first time I competed was in Des Moines and my boat got 2nd place. It was the most awesome feeling ever to hear augie cheered down the water, your cox cheering you on, and crossing the finish line" - Lynette Bisanz
"There is nothing like getting up at the butt crack of dawn to row on the Mighty Mississippi in 30 degree weather. I do it because I love the feeling of gliding across the water in the blackness of the moring." - Greg Choyke
Historic
Quotes:
"When
one rows it is not the rowing which moves the ship: rowing is
only a magical ceremony by means of which one compels a demon
to move the ship" - Nietzsche
"In
rowing as in life, there are competitors and there are racers.
The competitor works hard and rows to his limit. The racer does
not think of limits, only the race." -Jim Dietz, Rowing Coach,
USCGA
Flatter
me, and I may not believe you
Criticize me, and I may not like you
Ignore me, and I may not forgive you
Encourage me, and I may not forget you. -William Arthur Ward
