Alpha Sigma Xi (originally Alpha Sigma Sigma)
Alpha Sigma Xi was founded to be the first moment in an experiment to escape the stupidity of unjustified degradation of individuals' self-esteem, or what most would call "hazing." Alpha Sigma Xi was created to savor the full experience of collegiate life, and not its bitter after taste.
The founding fathers created Alpha Sigma Xi to give the individuals of Augustana society a choice to avoid the unnecessary degradation of character through the unfortunate practice of hazing. Alpha Sigma Xi was created as the first president, Keith Williams, would say, "to give people a chance at a Frat that goes completely without hazing." Chris Mikita went as far as to say that "many of the fraternities on campus fall short of his expectations when it came to the treatment of their pledges." Noel Allen felt Alpha Sigma Xi should be "a good time without having to do the absurdities." Hazing was that unnecessary practice. SongSoo Anderson, the second president of the fraternity, stated what he felt Alpha Sigma Xi stood for and many of the first members would agree: "We (the members) stand for a new order of fraternal brotherhood whereby a person is able to participate in a social, service, and scholarship congregation of non-hazing individuals." |
