As an organization geared towards community service, our goal is to complete one service or awareness activity each month. The list that follows includes projects that we have done in the past as well as projects that have become tradition for us to do every year. Not every project is done each year, but this will give you an idea of what ACHOO is about.
Susan G. Komen on the Go - The Susan G. Komen on the Go mobile experience educates and engages people of all ages in the breast cancer movement where they live, work and play. This stop at Augustana was a great success and we hope to repeat it in upcoming years.
Nicaragua Medical Mission Trip - Operation JETS is comprised of a set of students involved in ACHOO that share a common interest in helping the international community. With the help of Dr. Wil Johnson and GMT, Dr. Good has organized two trips per year to several cities and villages in Nicaragua. There are several requirements for someone to join. To find out more visit the website or contact Dr. Good.
Organ Donor Awareness Week - April is National Organ Donor Awareness month. In honor of this cause, we choose one week in April and designate it as Organ Donor Awareness Week on campus. We hand out lots of FREE organ donor items and information about becoming a donor. We distribute a fact vs. myth quiz to all of the students. The events of the week culminate in a ceremony with speakers to honor donors and recipients.
Melanoma Walk - The Melanoma Walk is a 5K community walk held on campus each year to raise money for Melanoma research. ACHOO is in charge of all campus publicity as well as chalking the course on the day of the walk.
Go Red for Women – Go Red for Women is a national movement to promote awareness of women’s heart disease. A day in February is chosen as National Go Red for Women Day every year. ACHOO sets up a table in the College Center on this day to hand out information and encourages people to wear red on this day.
Volunteering at Trinity or Genesis Hospitals - Students are able to volunteer at either of these hospitals. ACHOO does not organize the volunteering per se, but we can put you in contact with the necessary contact person at the hospital.
Yard Work Fundraiser - ACHOO raised more than $400 by doing yard work for professors. It was a great way to get to know each other and the professors, too!
Adopt a Family - For Christmas, we worked with a local women’s shelter and were able to buy more than $300 worth of clothes, toys, small appliances, etc for a family in need.
Peace and Social Justice Coalition
ACHOO was involved with other social interest groups on campus in planning activities for Human Rights Week during the third and fourth weeks of winter term. The goal was to promote action and awareness of human rights issues such as Darfur, AIDS, Poverty, Human Trafficking, and other issues.
Operation Over the Counter
This activity is a way to gather needed over the counter medicines for upcoming trips to Nicaragua. Operation JETS and ACHOO held this charity drive in the college center and science building. Medicine that is always needed: adult and children's vitamins, ibuprofen, Tylenol, Prilosec OTC, hydrocortisone, etc.
