iMovie '09 - Reviewing your footage and labeling clips

There are two main ways that you can review your footage after it is imported:

  1. Play through it and then move clips into your project
  2. Play through your footage, label clips as favorites or rejected clips, and then move clips into your project

Either technique will work, but there are some benefits to labeling your clips:

  • Once clips are labeled, you can sort the clips by their statuses as favorites, unmarked, or rejected
  • You can hide the clips that you know you won't use without deleting them completely
  • You can mark your favorites so that you can make sure that all the best footage is included

Label Clips

  1. Select the part to be labeled
    • Click on the portion of the clip that you want to label
    • Click the edge of the left and/or right edge(s) of the yellow box that shows up and drag it to where you want the label to start/end
  2. Decide how to label your clip
    • Click on the dark star to mark the selection as a favorite
    • Click on the lighter star to unmark the selection as a favorite
    • Click on the X to reject the selection (see the note below to learn how to unreject a selection)
  3. You can use the dropdown in the event browser to indicate which type of clips you want to view
    • To see all of the footage, choose All Clips
    • To see only the clips that are marked as favorites, choose Favorites Only
    • To see all of the clips except the clips that you rejected, select Favorites and Unmarked
    • To see only the clips that you rejected, choose Rejected Only

Note: If you accidentally rejected a clip or simply want to unreject a clip, view all of the rejected clips, select the clip that you want to unreject, and click on the Hide Rejected button at the top right of the event browser.
