Camtasia Studio for Mac and PC

Unlike the other programs listed under video editing, Camtasia is not a free program. You can download a 30-day free trial at the TechSmith website, but after that will have to purchase a licence. To downoad Camtasia, go to: http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.html

General Video Editing Tips

  1. Clean up your screen – Make sure that there isn’t anything unrelated to your video showing.
  2. Write a script.
  3. Practice.
  4. Use a good microphone and be aware of your location (microphones are available in equipment checkout and our private editing room, Olin 112, is often available).
  5. Save early, save often!
  6. Set the size that you want the final video before editing.
  7. Save all files together so that you can find them easily in the future.

Camtasia on a PC

Note:  You will be prompted to set your project’s size after you record, but before you begin editing.

Getting Started

  1. Open Camtasia from your Program files and click the Record the screen button at the top of your screen.
  2. Decide:
    • What monitor do you want to record? Or what part of your monitor?
    • Do you want to record with your webcam at the same time?
    • Which microphone should you use?
    • Should you record the system (computer’s) audio?

Recording your Screen

  • Start recording: Click the record button (or F9) > countdown.
  • Stop recording: Click on the red icon in the menu bar at the top right of the screen and choose Pause (or F10).
  • Preview window:
    • Save and edit – Allows you to save your raw recording and go directly to the editing interface.
    • Delete – Scrap the recording.

Editing Interface

  • Clip bin – Top left section, where all of your raw media (audio/video/images clips) are imported.
    Note: You will find effects, transitions, etc. in the tabs at the bottom.
  • Canvas – The viewing area, where you control/view how your project looks at each time.
  • Timeline – The strip at the bottom of the screen that shows how the video plays in relation to time. This is also where you will be doing your editing.

Timeline Tips

  • Each row is a different track: audio, video…
    Note:
    The clip on top in the timeline will be on top in the canvas.
  • The arrow at the top is the playhead. It shows the location of the frame you are editing/previewing.

Adding Media to a project

  1. Right-click on the clip bin and choose Import Media (ctrl + I).
  2. Locate your file.
  3. Click Import.
  4. Drag them to the timeline.

Preview/Trim/Cut

  • Make selections – Drag the green in-point and the red out-point of the playhead to the edges off your selection.
  • Cut selection – Click on the X above the timeline.
  • Split a clip – Bring the playhead to the frame that you want to split and click on the split button above the timeline

Note: There are also copy and paste buttons that you can use to duplicate a selection.

Zoom/Move Media around

  1. Select the media.
  2. Make your changes:
    • To resize: Click and drag the dots along the edge.
    • To move: Click the media and drag it to where you want it.
    • To rotate: Drag the small circle to the right of the center of the media.

Exporting Your Final Project

Note: Make sure to preview first!

  1. Click the Produce and share button above the clip bin.
  2. Click on the dropdown menu and choose your preferred size (no larger than the original video size).
  3. Navigate to where you want to save it.
  4. Name your project.
  5. Click Export.

Camtasia on a Mac

Change size

  1. Choose adjust canvas… in the canvas zoom dropdown.
  2. Choose preferred YouTube setting (no bigger than the quality you recorded).

Getting Started

  1. Open Camtasia from the Applications folder or the dock (will bring you directly to the recording interface).
  2. Decide:

Recording Your Screen

  • Start recording: Click on the red record buttonàcountdown.
    Stop recording: Click on the red icon in the menu bar at the top right of the screen and choose Pause (or shift + command + 2).
    • Delete – Scrap the recording.
    • Start over – Scrap the recording and try again.
    • Resume – Continue from where you paused (or shift + command + 2).
    • Complete – Finish recording and go to the editor (make sure to name the recording here).

Editing Interface

  • Media bin – Top left section, where all of your raw media (audio/video/images clips) are imported.
    Note: This is where effects, transitions, etc. are found.

Note:Click on a thumbnail and move your curser over the thumbnail to preview a clip.

Preview/Trim/Cut

  • Preview – Press space bar to start/stop and drag the playhead to quickly jump to a specific spot.
  • Trim from edge of clip – Move playhead to where you want to clip and drag the edge of the clip to that point.
  • Trim from the middle of a clip – Move the playhead around where you want to start clipping, press shift, click and drag along the area you don’t want, neaten up the edges by clicking and dragging them, right click (or ctrl + click) on the selection, and finally choose Ripple Delete.
