What to do if your cell phone or tablet is lost or stolen

When you use your mobile device to store sensitive information, it is important to know how to keep that information secure. Both Android and iOS have features that can help you to keep track of your phone or tablet and protect it remotely - by locking or erasing the device. Read on to learn More

Android

Lost your Android device?

If you lose your phone, you can use Android Device Manager to locate it or if there is any sensitive information on the phone, you can erase the contents remotely. To view the features of Android Device manager:

  1. Go to www.google.com/android/devicemanager
  2. Log in with the Google account associated with your device.
  3. If you have multiple devices, you will see an arrow next to the name of the device that indicates that you can click on the name to select your other devices

  4. Follow the directions in the sections below to view your phone’s location, ring it remotely, change the pass code remotely*, or erase it remotely*.

*These features require you to set up Lock and Erase before you lose your phone!

How to find your Android phone or tablet on a map

Simply log in to Android Device Manager (see URL above) and you will see the location of your device on a map.
Note: Location settings must be enabled on the device*:

  1. Pull down the notification bar
  2. If the GPS button at the top is glowing, your location settings are on. If it is greyed out, they are off. To turn them off/on, press the button.

How to remotely ring your device at full volume for 5 minutes

  1. Log in to Android Device Manager (see URL above) with the Google account associated with your device.
  2. Click on the Ring button.

Your phone should ring on the highest volume for the next five minutes or until you unlock the screen. If that doesn’t give you enough time to locate it, you can always press the button again.

How to set up Lock and Erase

Note: You will need your phone for this step.

  1. Go to Android Device Manager: www.google.com/android/devicemanager
  2. Click on Set up Lock & Erase

  3. Click Send
     Click the send button on on the resulting notification
  4. You should see a new symbol at the top of your screen:
    You will see an icon pop up in the notification bar at the top of your screen
  5. Drag down the notification bar and tap on the notification that says Android Device Manager: Set up remote lock and factory reset
    After you drag down the notification bar, you should tap on the Android Device Manager notification.
  6. Tap Activate
  7. Review which options you want to allow: Remote Locate and/or Remote Lock and Factory Reset.

  1. Go to Android Device Manager: www.google.com/android/devicemanager
  2. Click on the Lock button
  3. Choose a new password (preferably one that you do not use for other devices/accounts)
How to remotely erase the contents of your device

  1. Go to Android Device Manager: www.google.com/android/devicemanager
  2. Click on the Erase button
  3. Confirm by clicking the Erase button.

WARNING!!!!! This will erase all of your settings, data, and apps that you have downloaded/changed!

iOS

Lost your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch?

As long as you set up Find my iPhone/iPad/iPod you can use iCloud to locate it if you have lost it. You can also mark it as lost or, if there is any sensitive information on the phone, you can erase the contents remotely.

How to set up Find my iPhone/iPad/iPod

Your iOS device has features that can help you locate it if you lose it or if it gets stolen. You can locate it on a map, play a sound, turn on lost mode,

  1. Go to your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch Settings (on your Home screen)
    Tap on Settings fromt he home screen
  2. Tap on iCloud
    Tap on iCloud
  3. Turn the switch on next to Find my iPad
    Turn the switch on by swiping right
  4. Tap OK

  1. Go to iCloud.com
  2. Sign in with your Apple account
  3. Click on Find my iPhone

  1. Go to iCloud.com
  2. Sign in with your Apple account
  3. Click on Find my iPhone

  4. Choose your device from the drop down at the top of the window:

  5. Click on Play Sound
    Choose your device from the dropdown menu.

  1. Go to iCloud.com
  2. Sign in with your Apple account
  3. Click on Find my iPhone

  4. Choose your device from the drop down at the top of the window:
    Choose your device from the dropdown menu.
  5. Click on Lost Mode
    Choose your device from the dropdown menu.
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions. At this point, you can set a passcode to keep strangers out of your device and a phone number for them to reach you. If the device is online, it will take effect immediately. If it is offline, it will take effect as soon as it connects to the internet.
How to erase your iOS device remotely

  1. Go to iCloud.com
  2. Sign in with your Apple account
  3. Click on Find my iPhone

  4. Choose your device from the drop down at the top of the window:
    Choose your device from the dropdown menu.
  5. Click on Erase
    Choose your device from the dropdown menu.
  6. Enter your Apple ID password
  7. At this point you can enter a phone number and message that will show up on the phone - wherever it is. If your device is online when you click erase, it will erase immediately. If it is offline when you click erase, it will erase the next time the device goes online.

Note: If you have been using iCloud backup, you should be able to retrieve your information once the phone is found.
