About the Emerge program

Emerge is Augustana's premier leadership and development experience for new students. It is designed to assist you in becoming an influential leader, to encourage you to identify and utilize your personal strengths, and to help you learn more about campus life. This fast paced training program teaches everything from understanding yourself and others to develop good communication skills that will help you reach your leadership goals at Augustana and beyond.

Emerge is a must for future campus leaders. Currently, most student leaders on campus were participants of the program in their first year at Augustana. By participating, you can connect with them, find out information about different organizations on campus, and possibly get on track to becoming an organizational leader in the future.

If you have any questions or want some more information, please contact Michelle Egan or Alex Odenkirk

The Program

  • Eight two-hour sessions on Monday nights during the fall term
  • Peer Groups of 8-12 participants with an upperclassman leader
  • Each participant will help with a community service day project in the Quad Cities
  • Attendance required for participants who wish to complete the program
  • Students receive a Certificate of Leadership from OSL upon the completion of program
  • Registration forms (with $40 fee) must be mailed prior to arriving on campus

What do participants think?

"Emerge impacted my college experience because it helped me meet some of my best friends. Plus, Emerge helped me become a strong leader and introduced me to all of the things I'm involved with on campus today."  Jon Simmons '16

"Participating in Emerge helped me to recognize and develop my own leadership style while working with different people in small groups. By far, Emerge has been one of my fondest experiences at Augustana." Clare Kilbride ‘13

"I loved getting to know the nitty-gritty details of becoming a leader. Learning how to become more efficient and aware of the type of people I could be working with is something that has really stuck with me." Destany Metcalf ‘14

"Emerge helped me to better understand myself so that I could better understand others. As a leader, that makes all the difference in the world." Nik Maggos ‘13

Michelle Egan '14,

Michelle is a senior from Orland Park, Ill., who is majoring in biology and minoring in psychology. She has big dreams to attend graduate school to study occupational therapy in hopes to work as a therapist at a children's hospital. Michelle has been on the Student Life Programming Board executive board for the past three years and participated as a peer leader for the Emerge program last fall. She is a member of the Delta Chi Theta and works as a student secretary for the Office of Student Life and Leadership. Michelle is so excited to be one of the co-coordinators for the program this year, and hopes that you enjoy your experience with it as much as she has. She looks forward to starting off the fall welcoming each of you to her favorite place on earth (Augie) and getting to know the new Emerge participants!

Alex Odenkirk '15,

Alex is a junior from Tucson, Ariz., double-majoring in applied mathematics and economics with a minor in computer science. He is an active member of the Augustana cross country and track teams, the Rho Nu Delta fraternity and the OSL Leadership Committee. He is also one of the founding members of Epsilon Tau Pi, Augustana's new Eagle Scout fraternity. When he isn't practicing or attending meetings, Alex enjoys playing croquet with the other members of the as-yet unofficial Augustana croquet club, and taking intramural softball games too seriously. He is rumored to play a mean game of chess (in the most literal sense of the phrase) and isn't too shabby on a longboard, either. Alex is a graduate of the 2011 Emerge program.
