Professional Staff
Welcome
Welcome to residential life at Augustana College. Since move-in day is right around the corner, we hope you'll find this information helpful as you prepare for this new and exciting experience.
Most Augustana students live in the residence halls. Our five halls are supervised by professional staff and peers, providing a comfortable and productive living and learning environment. As a student resident on campus, you'll find the support and resources to thrive here-in class, on the playing field, in the lab or studio, or at home in your residence hall.
We look forward to personally welcoming you to the Augustana community, where we'll do our best to make you feel at home.

Open House
Some students like to see their rooms before school begins to finalize room arrangement plans and perhaps meet their roommate. On Saturday, July 28, from 10 a.m. to noon, all residence halls and Transitional Living Areas will be open for you to come and take a look at your future home. Although we're very happy to provide this popular service, please be aware that preparations -- including cleaning for your arrival -- are still underway and won't be completed until we officially open on August 22, 2013.
If you plan to visit, simply report to your assigned residence hall. Those residing in Transitional Living Area housing should contact the Office of Residential Life at 309-794-2686 for their Open House check-in location.
Though some of campus will be closed on that day, most of the places you'll want to visit -- such as the residence halls and houses, the College Center snack bar, Runestone Bookstore, Admissions/Financial Assistance, Business offices and the Pepsico Recreation Center -- will be open. We will be happy to provide you with community information and directions to area restaurants upon request.

Residential Life Staff
Augustana's Residential Life staff members are trained to help you adjust to your new surroundings, and will assist you throughout the academic year.
Hall service desks are maintained by Community Advisors (CA) and by student Desk Assistants (DA). These staff members are ready to help with emergencies, answer questions, provide directory service, check out hall equipment, monitor hall security and even provide change for laundry and vending machines.
Community Advisers (CA) are students selected for their willingness and ability to help their peers. A CA's primary responsibility is to promote the development of a comfortable community environment. Since your CA lives right on your floor, he or she is readily available to answer questions and help you get settled. Your CA is prepared to spend extra time with you to assure a smooth transition to college life, so don't hesitate to ask your CA questions about your hall, room, classes, or anything else you may need.
The Assistant Residence Director (ARD) are students selected for their experience, willingness, and ability to help their peers. There is an ARD in each building that supervises the service desk, supports the CA staff, co-advises the hall council, and assists the Area Coordinator. Your ARD is available for assistance during posted office hours.
The Area Coordinator (AC) supervises the student staff and hall operations. Each AC is a trained professional, able to assist with a variety of concerns and situations including housing-related questions, roommate issues and individual counseling. Our AC staff strives to establish strong, positive learning environments within their residence hall communities.

Move-in Day
Hundreds of students, assisted by their family and friends, will move in on Thursday, August 22, 2013 starting at 8 a.m. Most new students check in between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Please be patient with traffic congestion and parking. Loading zones will be available near each building. Beware that vehicles parked in fire lanes located at the entrance of each hall may be ticketed by the Rock Island Police Department.
Each hall has its own system for move-in day. The CA staff and a limited number of volunteers will be available to help you with the process. Volunteers can be easily identified by their "Move In Crew" T-shirts, so please seek them out. The most efficient method is to unload all belongings near the entrance of the building and then park your car in the lot nearby to make room for others to unload.
Come prepared to move in during any type of weather. Keep in mind that your belongings may sit outside for a period of time while you make trips to your room. Dollies can be very helpful on stairs (there are no elevators except in Swanson Commons and Parkander). A few dollies and/or carts are available in each of the halls, but if you have your own we recommend that you bring it.

Early-Arriving Residents
There are two basic categories of early-arriving residents: those who must be on campus early as required by an athletic team or academic/staff department (required early arrivals) and those who simply elect to come early for personal reasons (elective early arrivals).
Required early arrivals are to check in on the date designated by their coach, faculty or staff member. They may report to the service desk of their assigned hall any time between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on the specific date determined by the individual coach or department. Required early arrivals are not charged for housing until the school year begins.
Elective early arrivals may move in as early as noon on Sunday, August 18, 2012. Students who elect to move in early for personal reasons will be charged $25 per day. No advanced permission is required. However, students who choose to move in early must contact the Office of Residential Life by phone (1-309-794-2686) or email (Lauraterronez@augustana.edu). Charges will appear on your college billing statement. Please note that we do not recommend early check-in for new students, since many student support services do not begin until the official move in date.

Check-In Procedure
Check-in occurs at the hall service desk. This is where you will receive instructions and fill out an emergency medical information card. The DA will issue your key, and provide directions to your room. They will also be issuing your Student ID Card, which acts as your meal card, library card, and access to enter your residence hall. Although it is a busy time, your CA will be available to answer your immediate questions and provide any assistance you may need.
Back to Table of Contents
Room Inventory Procedure
Soon after your arrival, your CA will ask you to complete a room inventory form. Be sure to thoroughly document any damages you find in your room and return it to your CA within 48 hours; you'll be billed for undocumented damages when you move out of your room. This procedure is easier to complete before moving all your things into the room.

Room and Roommate Assignments
Roommate selections are made based on information you have sent to our office. We have considered your special needs, roommate requests, building preferences and interests. Since many students often make similar requests and returning students select first, we are not always able to meet all housing requests.
Room or roommate changes may be made during the second and third week of each term. Your AC or CA can provide you with information on this procedure.

Residence Hall Living
Hall Features
Each residence hall has recreation and study areas. Dining facilities are available in Westerlin Residence Center and the College Center; all other halls provide kitchenettes. Westerlin and Swanson Commons feature internal convenience stores as well, where pizza and a variety of snack items are available for purchase with a meal card or cash. Computer rooms are available in each hall with the exception of Swanson Commons, which has wireless capabilities. All halls have wireless access in their public areas.
Bathrooms are generally community-style according to gender, offering a degree of privacy with curtained shower stalls. An added feature in the women's hall bathrooms is shelving with attached towel rods for personal items. The Swanson Commons East Wing suite bathrooms are shared by four occupants and contain two sinks, one toliet, and one shower that is cleaned on a weekly basis.
Laundry facilities and ironing boards are available in each hall. A load of laundry costs $1 to wash and $1 per drying cycle. Although some halls have coin-operated machines, for efficiency's sake you can purchase a $5 laundry debit card at any of the card service centers located in Westerlin Residence Center, Swanson Commons and the College Center. You can place up to $20 credit on your card at a time. Please note that the card service centers only accept five, ten and twenty dollar bills.

Personalizing Your Room
You can personalize your room in a variety of ways. The ideas suggested here are best implemented a few weeks after you're settled.
Since living in a residence hall requires packing a lot of stuff into a small space, it's a good idea to contact your roommate(s) before you arrive to determine who is bringing what. Assuming you're willing to share, you should be able to bring just one of the following items for common use: TV, VCR/DVD, landline telephone, microwave and small refrigerator.
Crates and organizers that stack or fold can keep chaos at bay. You might want to consider leaving some of your possessions at home, at least at first. Once you're on campus, you'll have a better idea of what you'll really need, and can pick up or return things when you go home for a visit or fall break.
This doesn't mean you should abandon all your personal things. Bring your favorite photos, stuffed animals, plants, knick-knacks and extra pillows for guests. Posters are another popular item. Some of the best products available to hang posters and other items are Handy Tack, rubber cement, and "Command Adhesive" by 3M Company because they're less likely to damage finishes and are available at most variety and hardware stores. But be careful; residents are charged for any holes or damage made in the room due to decorating.
Some rooms include bulletin board strips for your convenience. If you are assigned to Swanson or Parkander, please use these strips exclusively; in these buildings, use of the adhesives mentioned above will still result in significant damage.
Carpet is nice, especially for winter days when the floors are chilly. (Note that rooms in Swanson Commons are already carpeted in a neutral tan.) You can purchase finished, room-size carpet pieces from the Residence Hall Association through Residence Hall Carpets. You can also shop around; most carpet stores carry a variety of remnants. Have one cut to your approximate room size (dimensions can be found on the Residential Life homepage) and bring a utility knife to customize it when you arrive, making sure the carpet doesn't stop your door from closing all the way. Also, make sure to select carpet without foam rubber backing, which can discolor the tile, and avoid any foam padding, tacks, tape or other adhesives to attach the carpet to the floor.
Back to Table of Contents
Lofts
All student rooms have loftable furniture. Since there are lots of ways to configure your furnishings (bunk, twin, various lofted positions), bringing your own handcrafted lofts is not allowed. Instructions for reconfiguring your furniture in any way that suits you best are available at each hall service desk. Directions are also available online on our Loft Instructions page.
Back to Table of Contents
Bedding
Coordinated bedding can brighten up rooms. All residence hall beds have extra-long mattresses (36" x 80"). Extra-long linen sets can be purchased through RHA by visiting Residence Hall Linens or at a wide variety of stores.
Back to Table of Contents
Windows
While our traditional residence halls have permanent blinds which cannot be removed, some students like to hang valances or other window treatments over them. Just keep in mind that rooms must be returned to their original decor at the end of the school year. You will be charged for any modification damage made to the woodwork or window frames (approximately $1 per nail hole, more for larger holes).
Back to Table of Contents
Entertainment
Most students regard music as a life necessity. Don't leave home without your stereo system or iPod -- unless you use supersized, bass-enhanced speakers that blast your neighbors' eardrums. In fact, with so many students living in close proximity, headphones can really help keep the peace. Musicians and vocalists, please remember that residence halls are not practice areas, but Bergendoff Hall has plenty of practice rooms available for your use.
TVs are common, but generally one per room is enough. Enhanced basic cable service is available to all residents free of charge.

Community Living Information
Alcohol or Drugs
Use or storage of alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs in the residence halls (including drug paraphernalia, empty containers and bars) is not allowed. If these items are discovered in a room, even non-participating bystanders in that room are subject to disciplinary action.
Alcohol is permitted if you are 21 years or older and reside in TLA housing, including the southwest wing of Swanson Commons and the Andreen Apartments.
Back to Table of Contents
Banking
There are a number of local banks within walking distance of campus, if you wish to set up a local savings or checking account. Quad City Bank and Trust provides on-campus automatic teller machines (ATMs) located in the College Center, Westerlin Residence Center, and Swanson Commons; the bank itself is about a ten-minute drive from campus. Most major bank cards work in the ATMs, but out-of-state deposits are not accepted. Paychecks ($200 limit) and personal checks ($50 student limit or $200 limit from immediate family) can be cashed in the College Center for a fee of $0.75.
Back to Table of Contents
Bicycles
Students are welcome to bring bikes, though it can be a challenge negotiating this hilly area. Bike storage areas are available in most halls (these are generally utilized for longer-term storage) and bike racks are installed all over campus. For safety reasons, bikes may not be stored in public areas of the buildings. You may also want to consider bringing a locking device as well as an older bike as vandalism/theft can happen. Those interested in registering their bikes on campus should contact the Office of Public Safety when they arrive or complete their Bicycle Registration online. Registration is recommended in order to help retrieve lost or stolen bicycles.

Care and Cleaning of Rooms
It probably comes as no big surprise that we expect you to keep your room reasonably clean (your roommate will appreciate this, too). Custodians will clean the common areas (hallways, lounges, external bathrooms, etc.) as well as the internal bathrooms in the East Wing suites of Swanson Commons. Just remember that if you leave your belongings in these areas, our cleaning staff will dispose of them. You will be responsible for taking your trash to the trash rooms or recycling centers in your building (or, when directed, to the outside dumpsters) on a regular basis.
Back to Table of Contents
Community Courtesy
Be considerate of your roommates and neighbors 24 hours a day, and they likewise should honor your needs. Due to the close quarters of community living, official quiet hours are observed each weekday evening after 10 p.m. and on weekends after midnight. Aiming for a culture of courtesy in all residence halls, it's generally understood that courtesy hours are in effect at all times.
Back to Table of Contents
Community Damages
Each floor or hall community is responsible for building damages not assigned to an individual. In this case, assessed charges are divided among each resident and billed at the end of the academic year or earlier if damages are excessive. To avoid these unnecessary costs, just treat our facilities as you would your own home and report any information you hear or observe regarding vandalism.
Back to Table of Contents
Electrical Appliances
Fire and safety regulations prohibit the use of some types of appliances. As a general guideline, appliances rated over 6 amps (800 watts) or bearing an exposed heating element are not permitted. Computers are the only exception to this guideline.
Popular appliances permitted for use in the rooms include small microwaves, popcorn poppers, coffee pots with an automatic shut-off feature, and hot pots (provided they don't have exposed heating elements). These items should be used for snacks only; residence hall rooms are not equipped for full meal preparation. Examples of items NOT allowed include electric skillets, hamburger and sandwich grills, pizza ovens and toaster ovens/toasters. All electrical appliances must be UL-approved. In TLA areas, small food-preparation appliances may be used in kitchens only.
Back to Table of Contents
Extension Cords
When many of our halls were built, no one dreamed of how electrical use would skyrocket. So, due to the fact that there are only a limited number of outlets available in each room, we permit use of extension cords provided that they are no more than six feet long, are UL-approved, and are not placed directly beneath furniture or carpeting. Another popular item is a powerstrip, which has the additional advantage of a circuit breaker to protect your expensive electrical equipment.
Back to Table of Contents
Firearms
All firearms, ammunition, bows and arrows, incendiary devices and any other items that are considered weapons, including air-soft, pellet and paintball guns are prohibited. You risk severe disciplinary action if these items are found on your person or anywhere on campus.
Back to Table of Contents
Guests
Guests are welcome, provided you obtain your roommate's permission first and you comply with established visiting hours. Minors must have written parental permission submitted to the AC prior to their visit in order to stay on the premises overnight. All guests must be personally escorted at all times.
Back to Table of Contents
Insurance
Theft happens here as on other campuses. As long as you take care to lock your room whenever you leave and when you are asleep, theft is usually not a problem. However, it is always wise to insure your possessions. The college does not assume responsibility for theft or casualty losses of students' personal property. Ask your parents to check with their insurance company to make sure your possessions are fully covered.
Back to Table of Contents
Keys
You'll receive a key at check-in, and it may not be loaned or duplicated. If you lose your key, you must pay for a lock replacement and a new key, which can cost $35 or more. If you are locked out of your room, a staff member will help, but be prepared -- you will be charged $2-$5 depending on the rank of the staff member providing the service. Since your ID card is used for building and living-area entry, it must not be loaned out either. Lost ID cards can be replaced for a $15 fee at the Access Control Office in the basement of Sorenson Hall. Hall identification stickers, also non-transferrable, may be obtained from your AC.
Back to Table of Contents
You will be assigned a locked box in the College Center mailroom where your mail will be delivered. A required $10 deposit for your mailbox key will be refunded at the year's end upon return of your key. You can mail packages and letters from the College Center mailroom, which also sells stamps and single envelopes.
Family and friends should address mail and packages in this way:
Student Name
Augustana College, Box #
639 38th Street
Rock Island, IL 61201-2296
Packages will be available for pick-up at the bulk mail office in the basement of Sorensen Hall (notification of delivery will be placed in your College Center mailbox).
Back to Table of Contents
Parking Decals
Almost everything you need is within walking distance of campus. To park a car in student lots, you must have a parking decal -- only a limited number are available for new students. Information about purchasing a decal will be sent to your home this summer. If you have immediate questions, contact Facilities Services at (800) 798-8100 x7160.
Back to Table of Contents
Pets
To protect the general health and safety of the community, the only type of pets allowed is small fish in aquariums no larger than 10 gallons in capacity. Aquariums are limited to one per room. Visiting pets (other than seeing-eye dogs) are not allowed inside the residence halls.
Back to Table of Contents
Refrigerators
The college does not offer a refrigerator rental service, but you may bring your own, under the following conditions:
- Refrigerator size may not exceed 4.3 cubic feet, or 3 amps
- The refrigerator should be operated and maintained in full compliance with sanitation and safety standards
- Refrigerators must be plugged directly into the wall outlet or a powerstrip (no extension cords)
- Only one refrigerator per room
Back to Table of Contents
Service Desks
The service desk in each hall is open during specific hours each day; the Swanson and Westerlin desks offer additional hours for your convenience and safety. Hours of operation are posted at each hall desk. In addition to general information and assistance (including emergencies), the residence hall service desk offers a variety of items for check-out including movies, tools, cooking utensils, games, cleaning supplies, change for vending machines, etc. Service Desk Phone Numbers are available online.
Back to Table of Contents
Smoking
Our residential facilities are smoke- and tobacco-free. Ashtrays are available outside each building for your convenience. State law prohibits smoking within 15 feet of the buildings.
Back to Table of Contents
Storage
Each hall maintains a storage room for luggage and other items too large to keep in rooms. Throughout the year you may request storage service each evening during CA duty hours. Information about special beginning-of-the-year storage hours will be posted at the service desk. College furniture may not be removed or placed in storage. Keep in mind that you assume all risk for damage to personal items placed in storage. Storage areas are restricted to three items per resident, depending on the facility, and are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Storage is not available in Transitional Living Area housing with the exception of Swanson Commons. Additional information can be found on our Residence Hall Storage page.
Back to Table of Contents
Telephone Service
More and more students use cell phones exclusively, but keep in mind that a number of dead zones exist in our buildings and 911 emergency locater service still isn't available on your cell phone. Plan to bring at least one landline phone per room. Augustana provides an active phone line in every student room, free of charge, for campus and local calls. You may make long-distance calls by using a phone card or by calling collect, but collect calls cannot be accepted.
Since all students are assigned a personal voice mailbox, an answering machine isn't necessary. Outside calls will be shuttled to the voice mailbox when another caller is on the line or when the phone isn't answered. Voicemail instructions are available from our Current Students page.
Back to Table of Contents
Temperature Control
We strive to maintain a comfortable internal room temperature. Depending on the room's location and other factors, some rooms will fluctuate from this standard. It is always a good idea to bring a fan and an electric blanket to maintain your personal comfort level.
Back to Table of Contents
Visitors
The main doors, as well as the living area doors, in each hall are locked to prevent access to unauthorized visitors. While anyone in the Augustana community with an ID card may access all residential facilities from 7 a.m. to midnight, the living areas are restricted to resident IDs only.
Residents may host guests in their rooms during established visitation hours (8 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. Friday through midnight Sunday). Be sure always to ask your roommate's permission before hosting a guest. All guests staying past midnight must be signed in at the service desk.

Until later...
This booklet offers just a sampling of the information you'll need to begin your college career. How will you remember it all? You can depend on the student handbook, Inside Augustana, and residential system handbook, Inside Our Halls and Houses, to guide you throughout your Augustana experience.
These guides will provide you with thorough information about campus services, personnel, policies and procedures. The information is important; you'll be held responsible for knowing it, so please take the time to review these guides carefully.
If you have any additional questions, contact the Office of Residential Life at (800) 798-8100 or (309) 794-2686. The Office of Residential Life is located in the west wing of Andreen Hall at 960 38th Street.
Have a great summer. We're looking forward to your arrival at Augustana!
