to give

Augustana College presents students with many opportunities to give back to the community. I found this through the service sorority Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA). Through this group I not only met new life-long friends, but also I get to serve this new community that I live in. Some of the great projects we get to do are cleaning at the Children's Therapy Center, participating in Relay for Life, as well as supporting any other cause that needs our help.

Coming to Augustana, I knew I wanted to volunteer and help those around me. I found Big Brothers Big Sisters right away, and it provided me with some of my fondest memories of freshmen year. My little brother, Sam, was a delight to hang out with every other Sunday. We played games, went on walks, made crafts, and baked cookies all on different occasions. Both Sam and I learned a lot from the experience, and I felt like I truly made an impact in the life of someone else!

My sorority, Sigma Pi Delta, allows endless opportunities for service. Recently, we were able to participate in the NCAA Women's Basketball "Think Pink" game. We raised money by selling pink t-shirts and donated to a wonderful cause. As a member of the Greek community at Augustana we are all able to make a difference in some way!

When I first came to college I was pretty certain that I didn't want to be part of greek life on campus, but I did want to be part of a close community that greek groups offer. That is when I found Alpha Phi Omega, a national co-ed service fraternity here on campus. With APO I have found a place to be part of an on campus community while also giving back to the community through service.

Through groups like InterVarsity and Campus Ministries, I have had so many opportunities to serve others. I went on the service trip to Ocean Springs last spring with Campus Ministries and this fall InterVarsity went to Kentucky. I have been able to serve at soup kitchens, food banks, boys and girls clubs, as well as many other places. At Augustana they really care about you being a well rounded individual. They don't only want you to succeed in school, but also in life!!!

Last year I went with Campus Ministries on a service trip over Spring Break to Ocean Springs, Mississippi to help with Hurricane Katrina Relief. It was so rewarding to be able to help people who really needed it in such a direct way. If it weren't for Augustana and how easy it is to get involved in groups on campus, I never would have had the opportunity to go to Mississippi. Needless to say, I'm definitely going back this year.

Augustana's Dance Marathon is an event that takes place every year, in which we work to raise money for the University of Iowa Children's Hospital through Children's Miracle Network. This event is not only something that has become a huge and important part of my life, as well as many other students at Augustana, but the efforts we put forth also make an incredible difference in the lives of the children and their families who stay at the hospital and need a place that feels like a home away from home.
When I started college at Augustana, I didn't feel at home right away. But when I went home for Thanksgiving, I realized that I was looking forward to coming back to campus and my new res hall. Then I found out about Habitat for Humanity, a group that fixes up houses for people who need them. We're even planning a spring break trip to Mississippi, to continue the work for families who lost their houses to Hurricane Katrina. Now I feel right at home with a hammer!
At Augustana you'll find a hundred ways to explore and use your skills, gifts and talents. What do you like to do? Where do you want to go? Here we'll show you some of the places on campus you can go when you need to belong or to believe, to pursue or practice, to think or to act.
