Duke of Northumberland's Recantation, 1553 John Dudley, duke of Northumberland, was one of the leading figures in the government of England under Edward VI and a firm supporter of the new Protestant establishment. He tried to prevent the accession of Edward's Catholic half-sister, Mary I. When he failed, he was condemned for treason. On the scaffold, he gave a famous speech protesting his loyalty to the Catholic church which offered the Marian regime a major propaganda coup. It was disseminated in print and in manuscript all over Europe. The campaign in manuscript was probably organized by Pole and his household.
