Ten Tips for Research in Music in the Tredway Library

1. Use the reference collection, located on the 2nd floor, which includes encyclopedias and handbooks that will give you background on a topic and lists of sources to go to for more information. You will find the books about music in the section with call numbers beginning with M. (The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians is available in hard copy in the reference collection as well as electronically on the library web page.)

2. Look for books to check out and read, books with more in-depth information, on the upper floors of the library. The books about music, with call numbers that begin with M, are located on the 4th floor. To find these books, search ALiCat, the online catalog to Augie’s book collection, by topic, author, or title. When you find yourself in the M section, browse the shelves to discover more books!

3. The default limiter in ALiCat is “any word anywhere.” This means that the catalog will retrieve all the books that contain any of the words you put in the search box. So if you put in “Amy Beach” the search will retrieve all the books that have the word “amy” in the record and all the books that have the word “beach” in the record--about 500 records! Rather, place quotation marks around “Amy Beach” so that the search will look for the phrase instead of each word; you get 6 results. Or insert an “and” in between “Amy” and “Beach,” and limit by a Boolean search. This way, you will retrieve only those books that have both words in the record--9 results.

4. If you don’t find the particular book or group of books that you are looking for in ALiCat, search the I-Share catalog which is a consortium of academic libraries in Illinois. You can request these books to be delivered to Augustana.

5. For contemporary topics or more focused discussion on a topic, you will want to look for articles in periodicals, that is, magazines and journals. Some of the periodicals we subscribe to are in hard copy format and some are in electronic format. To find either format, search the library’s databases found on the library web page.

6. Academic Search Premier (ASP) and JSTOR are two databases that provide access to articles in periodicals across the disciplines, including music. ASP provides access to popular magazines as well as scholarly journals. JSTOR provides access to the full text of archives of scholarly journals. Under “Fine Arts” on the Library web page, you will find RILM, a database that provides access to only music journals, and other helpful databases.

7. Important: When you find an article that you want to read and if a link to the full text of the article is not provided, GO TO “Augustana’s Periodicals” on the library web page. Type in the journal title you are looking for (not the title of the article), run the query, and get a definitive list of places where you can find the full text of the article.

8. If the full text of the article is not available through the Tredway Library, you can request a copy of the article through interlibrary loan.

9. If you use the web, remember that not all websites are created equal. Make sure the site is reputable and authoritative. Some suggestions:

Worldwide Internet Music Resources from Indiana University:

EMP website, the Experience Music Project, a museum of popular music, in Seattle:

Recommended sites from Harvard:

From the Lincoln, Nebraska public libraries many links to popular music:

10. ASK either me or another reference librarian for help. We staff the round desk (it’s octagonal, actually) on 2nd floor, waiting for your questions. You are welcome to find me in my office, too, which is located on 3rd floor next to the copy machine.
