Guide to Science Resources

This science research guide is designed to make browsing and searching more productive. Augustana’s Tredway Library is organized by Library of Congress (LC) designation, so most science materials have the same first letter, Q. This applies to all formats of material, such as books, journals, videos and reference materials. Specific scientific disciplines have a two-letter designation identifying their particular field. The handout entitled, Understanding Library of Congress Classification in Tredway Library gives more classification examples.

G = Geography
GE = Environmental Sciences
Q = Science
QA = Math, Computer Science
QB = Astronomy
QC = Physics
QD = Chemistry
QE = Geology, Paleontology
QH-QR = Biological Science
R = Medicine
T= Technology

General reference materials
Science dictionaries, encyclopedias, desk reference guides, and collected biographies are found at the beginning of each section. All reference materials are located at the north end of 2nd floor and can be used in the library. These are useful for formulating topics and identifying key terms (scientific and common) before doing more specific research.

Indexes
Most science indexes are now available electronically. These are listed on the Science page with links directly to the databases. All 90+ indexes we subscribe to are listed alphabetically under Augustana’s Databases A-Z.

To discover where a particular journal is indexed, go to JAKE, http://jake.med.yale.edu. Search by journal title for indexes in which it is listed. Then return to the appropriate index that we subscribe to search for your article.

Journals
Many science journals are available in print, microfiche, and full text online. The Augustana’s Periodicals link on all Library pages will inform you of our holdings and the formats available. If a journal can be accessed electronically, the link is available from this page.

Citation Style Guides
Different disciplines use unique citation styles for publishing their research. We have created style guide handouts to assist you in appropriate formatting. For more detailed examples, refer to the style guide appropriate to your discipline.

Biology – CBE (Council of Biology Editors) format. Reference is Scientific Style and Format: The CBE Manual for Authors, Editors and Publishers, 1994 found at REF T11.S386 1994. For tips on writing an annotated bibliography in CBE Style, click here.

Chemistry – ACS (American Chemical Society) format. Reference is The ACS Style Guide found at REF QD 8.5 .A25 1997 or on two hour reserve under Jensen. An abbreviated version is available at http://pubs.acs.org/books/references.shtml

Geography – Use AAG Style (Association of American Geographers).

Geology – Journal of Geology style. Examples available at: http://www.geosociety.org/pubs/geoguid5.htm

Math/Computer Science – Choice of professor. Usually use MLA format which can be found in A Writer’s Reference found at REF desk or online at http://www.dianahacker.com/resdoc/

Physics – AIP (American Institute of Physics) format. Reference is AIP Style Manual, REF QC 5.45 .A45 1990.
