Understanding Library of Congress Classification in the Augustana College Thomas Tredway Library

The Augustana College Thomas Tredway Library uses the Library of Congress (LC) classification system.  LC classification is alphanumeric; i.e. it uses letters and numbers to find a location for the book on a shelf.  The Dewey Decimal classification system uses mostly numbers to place a book on the shelf (000-999.999).

An example of  LC call number:  PL856.U673 S4513 1991

PL alphabetical order:  N, P, PA, PL, Q, QD
856 whole number:  7, 93, 856, 857, 1200
.U673 S4513 alphabetical and decimal:  .Q23, .Q4, .U65, .U673
decimal number:  .2, .24, .8, .8234
1991 chronological:  1991, 1994, 2003

If these 6 books were an entire collection, this is how they would be arranged on the shelf from left to right.
