The MIT Encyclopedia of Communication Disorders
REF RC423 .M56 2004
Divided into four categories of voice, speech, language, and hearing, this one-volume encyclopedia provides two to three-page entries on topics in communication sciences and disorders. Each article is signed by an expert in the field and is followed by a list of books and journal articles that contain further information.

Finding Articles in Journals

ASHA journals:
ASHA, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, publishes four journals that should be good places to find articles on your topic: American Journal of Speech Language Pathology; Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research; Language, Speech and Hearing Services in Schools; and American Journal of Audiology. To search any one of these, go to “Augustana’s Periodicals” on the library home page, and type in the title of one of the journals. The results page will list databases where you can search by topic and find the full text of articles. Choose the link that says “online” which will lead you to the ASHA archive. Here, you can now search your topic in the journal, or you can search all four journals at once by scrolling down to the bottom of the page and clicking on “all ASHA journals.” Then click on “search.” You can now search and get the full text of articles in all four journals.

To find articles in journals other than ASHA, use the following databases. In the citations that result from your search, you may or may not be provided a link to the full text of an article. If there is no link, search the title of the journal in “Augustana’s Periodicals” because we may have the full text somewhere else in our holdings. If  “Augustana’s Periodicals” does not provide a link to the full text, your next step would be to initiate an interlibrary loan for the article. Allow a week for this process, although usually it doesn’t take that long.
