Research Goals for assignment: Students will conduct ethnographical research of local African American congregations for a group-written research paper. Students will be able to contextualize their anthropological fieldwork historically.

This is a two-volume encyclopedia that contains information on several faith communities in the United States.  Each entry includes text that explains trends within the faith community.

Encyclopedia of African American Religion
REF BR 563 .N4 E53 1993
As the title suggests, this book will be especially useful for students research denominations that are made up primarily of black Americans.

Encyclopedia of African and African-American Religion

A concise, two-volume encyclopedia that includes entries for American denominations as well as significant church leaders and religious movements in the United States.

Encyclopedia of the American Religious Experience

New Historical Atlas of Religion in America

This large and colorful reference book contains detailed information on the history of denominations within the United States, as well as helpful maps that illustrate growth, decline, and migration of American Christian denominations.  Also includes are sections explaining the religion within ethnic groups in the United States.

Worldmark Encyclopedia of Religious Practices

A three-volume reference work in comparative religion, the first volume breaks down the trends and issues of specific denominations within Christianity.

This is an index to the history of the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present. Published since 1964, the database comprises almost 400,000 bibliographic entries. Limited to six simultaneous users.

AnthroSource
Developed by the American Anthropological Association (AAA), AnthroSource brings 100 years of anthropological material online, including current issues for 15 of the AAA's most critical peer-reviewed publications (including American Anthropologist, American Ethnologist, Anthropology and Education Quarterly, and Medical Anthropology Quarterly) and an electronic archive of all AAA journals.

ComAbstracts
A comprehensive database of articles and books in human communication studies, this database offers indexing to over 125 journals. Search by keyword, phrase, or author. Citations and abstracts, not full text, are provided. We may have the journal in full text in another database or in hard copy.

Communication & Mass Media Complete
This database provides an invaluable resource for students, researchers, and educators interested in any and all aspects of communication and mass media. The database offers full text for over 200 titles and contains citation coverage for additional sources.

Religion Index (ATLA)
A database containing citations and full text to more than 1100 international journals, essays, and publications in religion and related fields. This will be a useful resource when trying to find information on the history and demographics of faith communities in the United States and throughout the world. 

Sociological Abstracts
Abstracts and indexes the international literature in sociology and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences.
