Guide to Resources in World Music
Getting started—reference:
For background information, help in narrowing a topic, or checking out the scope of a topic, try using an encyclopedia in the reference section on 2nd floor of the library or online.
The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music – 10 volumes
REF ML100 .G16 1998
This encyclopedia, which at Augustana is available only in print, is devoted to the music of the world’s peoples and is a must for researchers in ethnomusicology. Each volume deals with a single region: Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, etc., and is arranged in three sections: 1) an introduction to the region, its culture and its music as well as a survey of previous music scholarship and research; 2) major issues and processes that link the musics of the region; and 3) detailed accounts of individual music cultures. Each volume concludes with a set of study and research tools—a glossary, lists of audio and visual resources, and an extensive bibliography. Accompanying CD’s of music samples (referred to in the text) are available on reserve at the circulation desk. Use Garland; you will find it immensely helpful.
The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians
REF ML100 .N48 (29 vols.) OR online (see next entry)
This is the standard and comprehensive encyclopedia for music. Start your research here.
Oxford Music Online
This gateway leads you to three major reference sources in music: Grove Music Online (the 29-volume encyclopedia The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians), The Oxford Dictionary of Music, and The Oxford Companion to Music. Although we have all three of these titles in print format in the reference collection, they are fully searchable and regularly updated in Oxford Music Online. Oxford Music Online also provides links to articles in The New Grove Dictionary of Opera and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz (which we also have in print in the reference section), but it does not update these articles. Articles in Opera or Jazz are accessed only through articles in Grove Music Online.
The New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments – 3 volumes
REF ML102 .I5N48 1984
Although published almost thirty years ago, this Grove “dictionary”—encyclopedia, really—is not fully duplicated anywhere else. Some of the articles can be found in Oxford Music Online and are updated there, but many are not carried over to Oxford Music Online at all. This will change eventually, as plans are underway to revise The New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments and incorporate it into Oxford Music Online.
Cuban Music From A to Z
REF ML106 .C8)7613 2004
Short entries about the people, genres, and history of Cuban music.
World Music: The Rough Guide
REF ML102 .W67W67 1999 2 volumes
Includes articles on popular and roots music from around the world; discographies for each country; and biographical and CD information for musicians.
The New handbook of Research on Music Teaching and Learning
REF MT1 .S44 2002
Each chapter in this excellent handbook provides an overview of research in the field of music education. Two chapters seem especially relevant to ethnomusicology: chapter 34, “Music, Culture, Curriculum, and Instruction,” and chapter 38, “Music Transmission and Learning: A Conspectus of Ethnographic Research in Ethnomusicology and Music Education.”
The big picture--looking for books:
Hunting and browsing for books in the library is fun. All music books are shelved on the fourth floor in the library in the M, ML, and MT sections. To get started, use ALiCat to search by author, title, subject, or keyword. Once you find a book on your topic, go to the shelves and browse around that call number for more books.
Subject headings (search by “subject” in ALiCat) useful for world music:
Ethnomusicology
Music—(name of country)
The nitty-gritty: searching for articles in journals:
Whenever you are searching in a database for articles, don’t give up if you find a good article without a link provided to the full text of the article. We may have the full text in another database. When you find such a citation, go to “Augustana’s Periodicals” on the library web page and search for the title of the journal. If we have the journal, it will be listed here; you can click on the link and retrieve the article you want.
JSTOR
An archive of full-text journals, including a good collection of music journals. Doesn’t include the most recent issues of each journal.
Academic Search Premier
A multi-disciplinary index to both popular and scholarly periodicals. Includes some full-text links.
RILM
An index to music journals only; includes some full-text links.
Browsing for articles: Ethnomusicology:
Ethnomusicology is the official journal of the Society for Ethnomusicology, and is the premier journal in the field. Tredway subscribes to this journal in print format, so you can always leaf through it for ideas and inspiration for research. The most recent copy is shelved on 2nd floor in the display area for periodicals under "E" for "Ethnomusicology.” For back issues, go to 1st floor and look under ML1 .E7.
This journal is indexed in Academic Search Premier, RILM, and other places, so you can search in those databases for articles by topic. But you can only get full text of articles from the print copies in the library or from JSTOR (through Fall 2003 only, as of this writing).
Surfing the web:
There’s lots of good information on the web related to ethnomusicology. Rather than Googling randomly, try some of these gateways. People have worked hard to find good web sites for you, so use their lists!
