Online Databases
The following databases are a great place to start to find
secondary sources relating to the Asian Studies that have been published in
scholarly journals and books. An effective way to search is to start with
a broad topic, such as "Taiwan" or "Haiku," and then to refine your search
as needed.
Most of the following databases specialize
in an area of academic scholarship (history, religion, political science, etc.)
Many of the possible research topics for this class are relevant to multiple
academic disciplines, so be encouraged to try several different databases for
information!
AnthroSource
Developed by the American Anthropological Association (AAA), AnthroSource brings
100 years of anthropological material online, including current issues for 15 of
the AAA's most critical peer-reviewed publications (including American
Anthropologist, American Ethnologist, Anthropology and
Education Quarterly, and Medical Anthropology Quarterly) and an
electronic archive of all AAA journals.
Bibliography of Asian Studies
The online Bibliography of Asian Studies, references
western-language books, articles and book chapters on all parts of Asia
published since 1971.
Contemporary Women's Issues
Contains over 10,000 full text records covering health & reproductive
rights, development, human rights, legal and workplace issues, and feminism.
Coverage includes journals, newsletters, reports, newspapers, directors, guides,
fact sheets, pamphlets and proceedings.
Family and Society Studies Worldwide
A comprehensive, systematic and non-evaluative source of valuable research
literature in the family social sciences. Over 140,000 citations and abstracts
are drawn from 800 professional journals, books, popular literature, and other
sources.
Historical Abstracts
An index to the history of the world from 1450 to the
present (excluding the United States and Canada which are covered in
America: History & Life).
Published since 1954 this database comprises over half a million entries.
JSTOR
Journal Archive
This resource stores hundreds of scholarly journals in
full text format, including many of the humanities journals in our collection.
Journals can be searched individually of in groups. Articles from volume one up
to between two and five years form the current date are available.
Religion Index (ATLA)
A database containing citations and full text to more than
1100 international journals, essays, and publications in religion and related
fields.
ScienceDirect COLLEGE EDITION
There are two Science Direct College Edition databases. The
Physical Sciences set is made up of 600 journals with full text beginning in 2001
through the current edition. The Health and Life Sciences database includes 890
full text journals beginning in 2001. Both databases are searched
simultaneously. To see only the full text articles, change All Journals
to Subscribed Journals in the Source search box.
Social Science Abstracts
This database contains indexing for more than 500 publications covering a wide
range of interdisciplinary fields such as addiction studies, anthropology,
corrections, economics, gender studies, gerontology, minority studies, political
sciences, psychology, sociology. Indexing coverage dates back to 1983, and
abstracts date back to 1994.
Sociological Abstracts
Abstracts and indexes the
international literature in sociology and related disciplines in the social and
behavioral sciences. The database provides abstracts of journal articles and
citations to book reviews drawn from over 1,800 serials publications, and also
provides abstracts of books, book chapters, dissertations, and conference
papers. Many records from key journals in sociology also include the references
cited in the bibliography of the source article.
