100 Years: The Hennepin Canal 2007 marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Hennepin Canal, linking the Illinois River to the Mississippi River at Rock Island. This display in Special Collections takes a look at what is unique about the canal, what has happened since the steamer SS Marion came into the Quad Cities, and how it has become a 'thing of beauty' today.
Olson-Brandelle
North American Indian Art Collection In August 2004, Kent Olson (Augustana '61) and his wife Elaine donated to the College the Olson-Brandelle Collection North American Indian Art. The Brandelle namesake of the collection, Kent Olson's great uncle Gustaf Albert Brandelle graduated from Augustana College and Theological Seminary in 1882 and 1884, respectively. He was head of the Augustana Synod from 1918 to 1935, eventually retiring in Rock Island. This collection establishes Augustana as a major study center for North American Pueblo Indian pottery. The 300 art objects comprise more than 220 traditional Pueblo Indian pottery forms, with the remainder in baskets and other textiles, original prints and clay figures. Also included are 36 photogravures by Edward Curtis from his volume The Hopi and a substantial reference library. Dating from pre-1600 to the present, the collection aims at documenting continuing traditions and the recognition achieved by Native American potters during the 20th Century. A substantive introduction of collection pieces have been installed in display cases on each floor of the library, organized according to tribal affiliations. A reception and dedication of the collection took place on Thursday, October 20, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Thomas Tredway Library.
