Kaleidoscope ARTivities for Children

Augustana College has been offering creative art classes for children for more than 60 years. Classes are offered all year to ages 4-12, although in summer, children can attend a week at a time instead of a series of Saturdays.

Kaleidoscope is directed by Augustana College professor of art Rowen Schussheim-Anderson. Some 15 professional artists, art historians and art educators teach the classes.

Classes are held at the Augustana Art Studio, 610 35th St., Rock Island. (Map) Pre-registration is required.

Materials are included in all class and workshop fees. If you are unable to attend the class, you will receive a refund (minus a $5 handling fee) if notification precedes the first class session. To receive the refund, call 309-794-7729 to cancel.

There will be supervision between classes. Please have children dress appropriately for art classes. This means clothing that can get dirty after painting, drawing, etc.

Oceans​ ​of​ ​Fun

We’ll make fancy fish and other sea creatures to recreate the beautiful world under water. Discover pattern, color and shape as we paint, collage and construct.

4-6 year olds | Corrine Smith | $42

Painting​ ​Studio

We’ll explore color as we discover a variety of brush and blending techniques. Create a self-portrait and creative abstract compositions.

7-8 year olds | Kelly Seastrand | $42

Trees

Draw trees in perspective and tree designs. Learn techniques to work with chalk and oil pastels. Our inspiration will be the design elements of line and shape, and autumn colors. Create a small wire tree sculpture too.

Nature’s​ ​Way

We’ll use nature as our source of inspiration as we explore organic shapes, textures, colors and patterns. Lots of mixed media.

Zoofari!

Create your own zoo as we draw, paint, construct and sculpt in this multi-media class. We’ll make animals wild and tame of all sizes!

7-8 year olds | Catherine Gehrmann | $42

Aboriginal​ ​Design

Learn the fascinating art of the Aboriginal people and the meaning behind their amazing works of art. We will look at symbols, ideas, patterns and designs using variations of line, circle and dot patterns.

Ways of transportation will be our theme as we create your own. We’ll work two and three dimensionally with a variety of materials.

Fall​ ​Drawing​ ​and​ ​Crafts

Draw a realistic fall animal scene as we learn the basics of vertical and radial design. Oil and chalk pastels will be our medium. We’ll also create a special fall mandala design, and a wood craft relief using natural objects.

Art​ ​of​ ​the​ ​Masters

Discover the formal properties of art that masters used and learn why their works were so successful. We will draw, paint and collage as we look at Van Gogh, Picasso and Paul Klee.

Adventures​ ​in​ ​Art

Express your own ideas as we learn the FUNdamentals of art…we’ll look at color, texture and shape as we explore a variety of media and techniques.

Pop​ ​Art

Explore subjects and techniques behind the ‘popular’ art known as Pop Art. We will use a variety of media, including up-cycled materials, to create two and three dimensional versions of this art culture.

Drawing​ ​Perspective​ ​Landscapes

Learn traditional and creative techniques as we draw fall landscape and animal compositions. We’ll work with pencils, charcoals, chalks, and more. You will receive a sketchbook and drawing pencil to keep.

Join us for an afternoon to learn a variety of bookbinding techniques. We’ll fold and sew special papers to create one-of-a-kind handmade books.

Who's who at Kaleidoscope

Corrine​ ​Smith,​ ​Co-Director is an adjunct assistant professor of art at Augustana. She has a B.F.A. from Southern Illinois University and an M.F.A. from the University of Kentucky and exhibits her work internationally.

Rowen​ ​Schussheim-Anderson,​ ​Co-Director is chair of the Art Department at Augustana. She has taught at Augustana since 1982, when she started Kaleidoscope. With a B.F.A. from Rochester Institute of Technology and an M.F.A. from Arizona State University, she exhibits her work internationally.

Julie​ ​Schneider​ ​is the registrar for Kaleidoscope and the secretary of the Art Department.

Addie​ ​Corby-Winn​ ​has a BA in Fine Art and Art Education from St. Ambrose University and has taught at Muscatine High School. She currently teaches at Rock Island High School and exhibits her work locally.

Heike​ ​Ehlers​ has a B.A. from Augustana College and an M.F.A. from the University of Illinois-Urbana. She has taught at the elementary through high school levels.

Elizabeth​ ​Gehrmann​ ​received her B.A. from Augustana College in Chemistry and German. She has worked in the arts with children of all ages for numerous years. Many years ago she attended Kaleidoscope!

Catherine​ ​Gehrmann​ received her B.A. in Biochemistry from Augustana College. She has worked in the Arts with children of all ages.

Jennifer​ ​Petersen​ ​has taught art classes through various local organizations, preschool through high school level to adults. She exhibits her work regionally.

Kelly​ ​Seastrand​ ​has taught preschoolers and kindergarteners and exhibits her work nationally.
