Time to Get Moving Into the New Year
As the start of 2014 rolls around, many of us will be looking at resolutions for some changes in life. These positive steps can impact your health and the health of your family. We all know life at Augustana can get very busy, but physical activity should be a priority. Set some key activity goals for you and your family and let's get moving!
Physical Activity Recommendations (from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
Adults need at least:
2 hours and 30 minutes (150 total minutes) of moderate intensity aerobic activity every week (such as brisk walking) and muscle strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week. Such activities should work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms).
1 hour and 15 minutes (75 minutes total) of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity (such as jogging or running every week and muscle strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week. Such activities should work all major muscle groups.
Children need at least:
60 or more minutes of physical activity every day. Be sure to include muscle strengthening activities (i.e., gymnastics, pushups) and bone strengthening exercise (i.e., jumping rope, running) for at least 3 days per week as part of your child's 60 or more minutes of physical activity.
There are a lot of resources to help pursue these goals. Augustana employees and their families have access to both the Pepsico Recreation Center and the Carver Center for Physical Education. Employees can also receive discounts at the Rock Island Fitness and Activity Center and the YMCA. For information on these and other employee discounts, click here.
Get up, get moving, and get active in 2014!
