Getting Fit in 2013

Losing Weight, Getting Fit in 2013

It probably isn't a surprise that year after year one of the most popular New Year's resolutions for Americans is to lose weight.    Many here on campus are most likely looking for some ideas on how to finally make this resolution a reality in 2013.  Augustana's Wellness Team would like to remind our campus employees about a number of benefits and programs that can help you reach those goals.

1. Weight Watchers @ Work

This Thursday, January 10, Weight Watchers @ Work will be hosting 2 informational meetings at Augustana.  These open house sessions will be at 10am and 2pm, both in Evald 215.  Weight Watchers is a nationally recognized company that has had years of success in helping people lose weight.  Weekly meetings will be hosted right here on campus if at least 17 people sign up.  Meetings include a weigh in, community support, and a discussion surrounding key eating and activity habits of healthy individuals.  Employees, spouses, and students are welcome to join.

2. On Campus Exercise

Along with a good diet, exercise is a vital component of healthy living.  Augustana hosts 2 great facilities, the PepsiCo Center and the RoyJ. Carver Center, to provide employees, spouses, and students with access to equipment and space for exercise.

3. Off Campus Programs

Do the campus facilities not meet you specific needs?  Augustana was excited to announce 2 new partnerships this past fall.  Employees and spouses can now enjoy employee discounts at both RIFAC (Rock Island Fitness and Activity Center) and the local YMCA.  Be sure to contact Steve Gottcent (stevegottcent@augustana.edu) in the Human Resources office if you would like more information.

4. Walk the Campus

Another easy addition to any healthy fitness plan for employees and students is to get out and enjoy the beautiful Augustana campus.  Whether you are enjoying the snow across the landscape, or are anxious for the warmth of the spring sunshine, take time to walk.  Augustana is located on a 115- acre wooded campus that provides multiple walking paths, beautiful nature, and some challenging hills to stretch your muscles just a little more.  If you are just starting a walking plan, or if you have been doing it for years, the Augustana campus can provide just what you need to keep walking.

If you feel the need to lose weight, change your diet plan, or get active, there are plenty of resources right here at Augustana for you to engage in.  2013 can be the year when resolutions become reality.  Let's get up, get active, and get healthy!
