Associate Vice President of Career & Professional Development

Augustana College is a private, selective, liberal arts college with 2500 students, situated on the bluffs of the Mississippi River in Rock Island, IL. It offers a rare opportunity for a dynamic Associate Vice President of Career and Professional Development to create and implement a new, integrated vision of career preparation and graduate success-a vision that will serve as a national model. A key responsibility will be to orchestrate career initiatives across and beyond campus, ensuring that students make the most of their Augustana experience, while simultaneously preparing for work and further education.
Reporting to the Provost and Dean of the College, the new career and professional development initiative enjoys the strong support of the President, Senior Cabinet and faculty. The AVP oversees 13 staff plus a large group of student paraprofessionals. The budget for the Office, which is part of the larger Augie Career Connections & Enrichment Center, is in excess of $1M.

The new AVP will play an essential role in achieving the goals laid out in the College's recently approved strategic plan, which focuses on enhancing student engagement and success, before and after graduation. Key parts of the new model include:

  • Integrated career, academic, and personal advising system
  • Links between formal and experiential education, including an intentional co-curriculum
  • Career Community, engaging alumni and parents
  • Campus internship program
  • Expanded opportunities for internships and jobs
  • Clear pathways to success in finding work or further education
  • Combination high-tech, high-touch approach that engages every student
  • Student ownership of their career plans and preparation

Qualifications

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE (*= requirement)
 

  1. Demonstrated ability to build an innovative program that results in the accomplishment of strategic goals*
     
  2. Clear understanding of the work world into which students will graduate and criteria for student success in gaining admission to graduate school or getting hired*
     
  3. Ability to design initiatives, programs, and services that facilitate student entry into careers of choice
     
  4. Ability to build, enhance, and connect students to networks and relationships on campus and beyond*
     
  5. Proven ability to effectively engage with multiple constituencies, e.g., faculty, trustees, employers and students-in individual meetings, small groups, large presentations, and in writing*
     
  6. Demonstrated effective skills in both leadership and plan execution*
     
  7. Understanding of assessment and the ability to use data to make decisions*
     
  8. Demonstration of key characteristics, including the ability to: innovate and think creatively; collaborate; connect; seize opportunities for serving the needs of students; plan for resources and personnel; and, build positive relationships with faculty
     
  9. Knowledge and understanding of the liberal arts and the advantages of a residential liberal arts college education and experience

EXPERIENCE (*= requirement)
 

  1. Ten years of leadership experience, including the development of major initiatives, in an area relating to careers, employment, or higher education*
  2. Experience in position(s) with significant responsibility for achieving results
  3. Demonstrated experience in building programs/initiatives with and through people who may, or may not, be direct reports*
  4. Demonstrated success in developing collaborative relationships and networks*
  5. Experience in effectively managing people, finances, systems, and technology*
  6. Experience in raising funds through the creation of results-oriented programs and initiatives
  7. Experience with eportfolios, online career resources, and other tools associated with 21st century career exploration and networking

    EDUCATIONMinimum of a Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience*
