Developing Internship Opportunities

An internship is the practical application of the skills, knowledge and talents that students are acquiring at Augustana or discovering about themselves during their college years in a work or volunteer setting.

Characteristics include:

  • May be part-time or full-time, paid or un-paid
  • Internships may or may not be for academic credit. The determination of credit is based on if this is a requirement from the company/organization, the academic department, or the desire of the student.
  • Intentional learning goals and objectives.
  • Intentional reflection.
  • An experience that enhances the learning at Augustana, as well as benefits the company/organization.

Steps to Begin an Internship Program:

1. Set Internship Goals

  • What do you hope to gain from establishing an internship program?
  • What specific projects do you envision being able to assign to an intern?
    • Does this help the intern grow and develop within your industry?
    • Is this something that a new entry level person might be doing?
    • Do you have the time to train them properly?
  • Are you able to provide regular feedback regarding the interns' performance

2. Write a Plan

  • Draft a job description that clearly explains the job's duties. This description can be modeled after a full-time job description.

    Things to include:
    • Description of the position.
    • Skills or classes required.
    • Hourly requirement.
    • Date range of the internship.
    • Location of company/organization.
    • Will you pay the intern? Clearly, paid experiences are most attractive to students being that many are paying for school or living expenses.
    • Application procedure- how should they apply? Contact infomation, forms etc.
