Internship profile: Cutting Edge Press

January  31, 2014

Augustana's book publishing course gave Alexandria Petrassi the skills for an ideal internship.

Petrassi, a senior from Mokena, Ill., is majoring in English and creative writing with a minor in Spanish. As an intern at Cutting Edge Press in London,  she did proof-reading and made editorial suggestions on manuscripts. She also appraised manuscripts and wrote reports about marketability, target market groups, potential editorial work, issues within the manuscript, and whether or not the manuscript fit in Cutting Edge Press's niche of "edgy, contemporary fiction or non-fiction."

"I also stuffed envelopes with books and press releases, gave my opinion on PR matters and previously published books, and did market research as well as cover design work," she said. "When all is said and done, I read 10 books during my six-week internship."

Petrassi said Augustana's book publishing course with East Hall Press was extremely helpful. Through her time working with Dr. Karin Youngberg, she was able to establish the foundation of skills needed to work in publishing.

"The highlights of my internship were definitely the free books, reading time, and my supervisors. I loved getting new books and manuscripts to read every week!" she said.

She said she does intend to work in publishing after graduation and Cutting Edge Press helped her solidify her plans.

"I think the work culture in London surprised me more than anything," she said. "I expected the internship environment to be very high-pressure, time-consuming, and serious. I could not have been more wrong! My supervisors were amazing and I felt relaxed at work every day, even with a deadline approaching.

"The work that I thought I would find 'time consuming' was actually very enjoyable, and I was able to work at my own pace. Overall, the laid-back, but still professional feeling at Cutting Edge Press surprised me in the best way possible."
