Hello everyone!
I hope everyone is doing well after the lovely snow/earthquake in some cases. You gotta love Illinois weather! The weather seems to have turned up some rowdy instincts in our Kindergartner’s, because when they got in the classroom today there were wild! It took a while for them to settle down. After they were settled we began working with our students for today.

I started my day off working with Will and Michelle. Today’s lesson was figuring out different ways to make 10. 11 and 12 by addition. We used Randy’s Balance Math computer game, and set one side equal to 10, and the students took turns using the different combination of numbers to make 10. In some cases they did get stuck, but both have enough number sense so that they are able to count on from any given number.  This way they figured out the 6 was four from 10, so 6+4 must equal ten. They flew through figuring out the different combination of numbers. I did this so they would be able to easier recognize the total number of dots on the domino and not have to count the dots. Once they had finished working on the computer I had them each roll a die and create an addition problem out of the number they roll. If one rolled 5 and the other a 1, they had to figure out 5+1. I did this to incorporate dot patterns into addition. They did awesome! I asked what would happen if we were to flip the numbers and have 1+5. Will looked at me like I had just asked the stupidest question ever, and said “They would be the same, it’s still six Miss Laura.” So than we wrote our next problem two different ways 6+5 and 5+6 to prove the point, and I sent them back to their seats.

I began to work with Ashley, whose working on the number 40 this week, and is struggling a lot. I have her count to 40, and we say 39 40 repeatedly so she is able to get the pattern, but when she has to do it on her own she says 39, 31. I have shown her cards, I’ve written it down, I really don’t know what to do to help her remember this number! It’s very frustrating for both me and her, so any tips would be welcome. On the plus side, she is showing more and more skill gain with counting out objects. While we worked with Randy’s Count Sort today she was organizing her objects, and not over counting, and remember to count aloud as she counts the chips. She also has realized the last number she says when she counts is the final number and no longer is recounting. So shes showing improvement in her strategies for counting, which is very good, I just wish she could remember 40. My goal is to have her count to 100.

Lastly, I worked with another student today who has quite a personality, and a flair for the dramatic. We played Pattern Sets, and this student could not sit still, they would become distracted and miss the pattern shown, and than guess a random number. When she did pay attention she seemed to have a concrete idea of patterns for numbers 1-6, but after that there was no recognition and she would just guess six. I tried to get the student to focus but there was no hope. She told me that she was bored of sitting so I sent her back to her seat, and hopefully next week will have an activity that can get her moving, and let her show her vivacious personality.

All in all, today was like any other day in the classroom, full of challenges, and unpredictability. The only thing I can ask is that my students put up with the fact that I am learning too, and that they are always ready to learn. As for me I have to promise them to figure out the best way for them to learn, and to always be ready to learn myself. Until next week!
