Today, we worked with students who were struggling to recognize the numbers 5 and 6. We did multiple different activities with the students involving the numbers 5 and 6, but one seemed to be extremely helpful to them. We showed both of the numbers to these students. They then traced them with their fingers. After tracing the numbers, we asked the students to try to come up with ways which they could describe what the 5 and 6 look like. One of the students stated that there was a letter “o” in the 6. We had the students make an “o” with their hands. Then we asked the students what happened if you didn’t make your fingers touch with the “o.” They stated that then it would make a “c.” Then, one of the students stated that there was a “c” in a 5. This was a great way for the students to start recognizing the numbers 5 and 6. I thought that it was very unique and would help them to identify numbers along with letters. We went on to ask the students if they could come up with ways which could help them to remember the number 6. One student came up with how it looked like a snake and six has the same starting letter as snake! We were very pleased with this and hope that these observation made by their peers will help the struggling students to recognize the numbers 5 and 6 easier.
