The worldwide Augustana College experience

Hi! My name is Katrina Jensen, and I just finished my sophomore year at Augustana. I am double majoring in communication sciences & disorders and psychology. I am also involved in a number of activities on campus including playing my French horn in Symphonic Band and Symphony Orchestra, Handbell Choir, Campus Ministries, Clogustana, Admissions Ambassadors and Peer Mentors. This summer, I am traveling to Singapore and Thailand where I will be participating in a volunteer abroad program. I hope that you will join me on my journey and share in all of my new, exciting experiences!

Pictures!

Hey everybody! By popular demand, this is going to be a photo blog! And to answer someone’s question the Thai word for penguin is pengueen!  They are the same!  Pretty cool, huh?  This is about the only word I have found (besides “donut”) that is the same in both languages. And also thank you to [...]

I’m a Local Celebrity!

It’s the day we’ve all been waiting for- I started working at my volunteer placement! If were not aware or have simply forgotten, my volunteer assignment was to teach English at a local public school.  There was one other person assigned to work at the school from my group- his name is Joon and he [...]

Public Transportation Extravaganza!

If you’ve never been on an old bus, fast subway, sky train, water taxi, and tuk-tuk all in one day, I highly suggest it.  Today was our public transportation training day.  We learned how to use the many various forms of public transportation in Bangkok which was a lot of fun but totally exhausting. The [...]

Rubbin’ elbows with the Buddha

Hello again! Just got home from a night out shopping at a night market.  It was so much fun!  After all of our activities today (more on that later), we had a free evening to do whatever we wanted, so another girl named Maggie and I decided we wanted to hunt down the local pool [...]

Thailand- Safe and Sound

Hello again!  Writing to you this time from exotic Bangkok! This morning was fairly uneventful-woke up, packed, then Natalie picked me up from the Y and we took a cab to the airport where I got on a plane headed for THAILAND!!! (Btw Natalie, I did find the Baakwa (?) at the airport but forgot [...]

Last day in Singapore : (

Today was my last day in Singapore, but it was a good one!  After saying goodbye to Belle, I jumped on a bus and headed to the Singapore Botanical Gardens.  I really needed a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, so this was a perfect escape!  I walked in and out of [...]

One Day, Three Countries

Good morning! You know some days you have those experiences that make you feel like a tiny little person in a big world?  Yesterday was one of those days for me. Belle and I met Jennifer (Genie) at our hotel and we got on a train to Little India, which is a part of the [...]

Not much time for a post this morning, I’m starting my day early! Yesterday I got to do a little more shopping and made the first shoe purchase of the trip (woooo!) and got a cute dress as well.  After that, I got lunch at one of the shopping centers.  There were lots of food [...]

The Singapore Life: Eat and Shop!

Yesterday’s missions: Accomplished!  After a nap yesterday, I headed out to explore Singapore (Anyone seen “Up”?  The wilderness must be explored!  Caw, caw!  Raargh!)  I got some money changed at my hotel, which was very convenient.  Armed with a handful of Singaporean cash and coins, I headed off to the nearest bus stop to begin [...]

It’s fun to stay at the YMCA!

Good morning from Singapore!!! It’s 11:30 am in sunny Singapore and I’m doing great!  My sushi mission in the airport failed, but I was successful in exchanging $20 for 1,851 yen.  The money was so pretty, I didn’t want to spend it, but I finally decided on buying a bottled green tea (the entire bottle [...]
