Venice

This week’s blog is about the weekend trip to Venice, Italy. Don’t worry, no earthquakes there.

We took an overnight train which was quite an adventure.  We had 6 people in a sleeper car compartment that was about 5′ x 7′.  There were 3 bunk beds on each side of the compartment with a little “walkway”.  I was one of the lucky ones that got to stay on the top bunk.  Fortunately I did not fall off the top bunk, but it was quite an adventure to try and sleep.

Venice is a beautiful city complete with boat taxis, ambulances, and police.  We spent much of our time walking around the canals eating gelato.  Yuummm.  They have almost every flavor imaginable.

Our last day in Venice was spent travelling to 3 different islands around Venice.  The first island was Mureno which is famous for their glass blowing.  The next island was Burano which is known for their lace making and for their colored houses.  The last island was Torcello.

During the week in Vienna we spent one day touring Sigmund Freud’s house.  We were able to see his office where he analyzed patients and we also some of his home videos.  It made Freud seem very real rather than just someone you read out of a book.

The next day we went to Vienna Open Lab, which is part of the University of Vienna.  This is a public lab where kids or college students can have birthday parties extracting DNA.  We ran experiments on our own DNA to see if we could taste a certain sort of bitterness.   Unfortunately I could taste the bitterness, not good.

The first day of our Easter break was spent at Stadtpark in Vienna.  We took a picnic and just sat in the park playing cards and laying around.  It was a beautiful day and it was amazing to just relax. More to come on my Easter Break in Barcelona, Spain.
