The worldwide Augustana College experience

A Much Needed Break from Packing

My adventure in Asia is only 2 days away! My mind is overflowing with thoughts about this trip! With a 44 lb. weight limit for luggage in China, picking 6 to 7 outfits to last me about 3 months is definitely a challenge, especially being a girl. The most important tip I’ve heard from others who have been on East Asia term is to pack light! I know I will be buying a ton of stuff on my journey (such as knock off NorthFaces!) but there is just so much I want to bring! As you can see from my attached picture, my room looks like it was hit by a tornado. There are clothes, suitcases, textbooks, and random items scattered everywhere and I’m normally a very organized person.

For months I have been counting down the days until I leave O’Hare Airport for Narita International Airport in Japan  and I’m suddenly having feelings of doubt. I can’t believe I am really doing this. Can I be away from my family and close friends for this long with limited communication? It still hasn’t fully hit me that in less than 48 hours I will be in a completely different world full of fascinating history, culture, customs, and traditions.

I am very excited but also scared and anxious. I haven’t slept much and I know that Wednesday night before the flight I will probably won’t sleep. I am going to miss my family, friends, and Augustana a lot but I know this trip will have a significant impact on my life and I can’t wait see the person I become.
