Robert Self

Hallo alle, wie geht’s euch? My name is Robert Self, but everyone calls me R.T. I proudly hail from Galesburg, Illinois, where the corn grows high. I don’t know if I’ll ever grow up, but as an adult, I hope to make good use of my German major. I take deep interests in sign language, fencing, playing trombone in Symphonic Band, and my beloved corgi, Geffery. For me, life is one big adventure, and my trip to Wittenberg, Germany is an experience I cannot wait to capture. Read up for some interesting stories! Tschüss!
Sorry for not writing in a while everyone – but things are a little tense here.
To begin, Amsterdam was absolutely amazing. Some of the nicest people I’ve ever met were there, and everyone spoke flawless English. You would never know that they were Dutch. I have found that the Dutch language is extremely close to [...]

So. Naturally after being here awhile, one tends to run out of the essentials such as shampoo and toothpaste.
My take so far on the differences… interesting. Honestly, just about whatever we have in the states, can be found here in Germany. However, trying to get the full experience, I decided to buy the actual brand [...]

So, I wrote down in my notebook awhile ago about an instance that I thought was funny. Upon re-reading it, I’ve decided to share it with all of you.
Germans are orderly people. That is simply how it is. Germans aren’t an (as I have come to know them) abruptly outspoken group of people. They don’t [...]

HALLA!
So. This last weekend was a little too relaxing for my taste.
I went to Magdeburg on Saturday. It was very nice, but the most interesting this about this city, is how modernized it is amongst all of the old East German buildings. Quite interesting to say the least. They have tried to take bright signs [...]

Hey everyone!
My weekend has been a bit less eventful this time around. I’ve had a lot of homework and catching up to do. But, I refuse to sit my time away, and decided I needed to treat myself to a day trip at the very least; I went to Dresden.
Dresden was horrifically bombed during WWII. [...]

Before I begin, let me preface this with: This is written for the sake of comedy. I’m writing to you all now in a state of mixed emotions consisting of but not limited to anger and excitement. This post is my reaction to a culture shock.
Tonight, we went to celebrate a friend’s 22 birthday. As [...]

So. Today I went to a German movie theater. Quite interesting.
The set up is much of that of an American movie theater. However, the popcorn was kettle, and you could purchase beer… naturally, and everyone has assigned seats printed on the ticket stubs. The previews were interesting to see in German rather than English, and [...]

… was to travel to the Baltic Sea. You see, the Wittenberg group is on a slight vacation of sorts. We had our last classes on Wed. and then we are free to travel until today, as we go back to classes tomorrow. Originally, I was to travel south for this time and go hiking [...]

Disclaimer: This post contains information about Beer. All those offended, get over it and soak up some of the culture already!
Hello world! How’s it going? Same old? That’s not bad. Oh, me? Yeah, well, I don’t mean to brag or anything, but I just went to see one of the coolest, most world renowned festivities [...]

So here is an interesting tidbit: Germans are straight forward.
This bit of information is something I’ve known for quite some time. I’ve studied it since high school. I’ve been here once before. I’ve experienced it. I feel as though I should be used to it. I’m not.
In English, we fiddle around with words to be [...]
