A window inside life at Augustana College

An Amazing Discovery on Small Business Saturday!

Welcome back, everyone! I hope all of you had a fantastic Thanksgiving weekend filled with family and food.

If you remember my intro post, you’ll know that I live in St. Louis, which is about 5 hours away from campus. It seemed a bit silly to do all of that traveling for three days at home, so I went with my boyfriend to his family’s Thanksgiving dinner in Dekalb. I’m originally from Sycamore (right by Dekalb!) so it was great being able to go back to my stomping grounds for a day. I met tons of people, so many that I couldn’t even tell you an exact number. I’m used to a Thanksgiving dinner with maybe ten people, and there were (at least!) two dozen at dinner that night. We actually had to eat at several tables. It was a little overwhelming at first, but his family was welcoming and showed me a great time!

We stayed in the Quad Cities for the rest of the weekend (my boyfriend lives over in East Moline) and did some shopping. I was brave and ventured out into the world on Black Friday, my first time ever! I don’t know if going out in the afternoon counts, but it was still exciting to me! If you know your holiday shopping terms, you’ll know that Saturday was Small Business Saturday. That day involved a trip across the river to Davenport to visit Kristin Hill, owner of Tin Hill Sculptured Pottery. My boyfriend and his family have been buying pottery from her for years, and we were excited to go visit her open house that day!

I could go on about her work, but I’ll let the photos do the talking for me.

The awesome thing about the baby dragon eggs is the customization. The buyer gets to choose what colors they want their dragon to be, and the possibilities are endless! For the two-headed dragon, my boyfriend decided to make one fiery like a phoenix, while the other one is going to be several shades of blue. I’m so excited to see how they turn out!

If you’re interested in looking at Kristin’s gallery (which I highly suggest you do!), check out her website here! Let me know about your Black Friday and/or Small Business Saturday adventures in the comments!

  1. Next time you’re out shopping, try the Village of East Davenport. I recommend the Soap Box, Lago’s, Mint Green and the artists’ shop on the corner by the bank (whose name I can’t remember).

  2. The East Village is awesome! Lagomarcino’s has the best ice cream and candy! It sounds like your shopping experience was a far cry from mine on Black Friday. I hit up good ol’ Best Buy and Target and found a few presents for myself, but also found some good presents for others as well. The crowds in Moline actually weren’t that bad compared to what I see on TV haha!
