So I’ve written a lot about Quidditch, but I don’t think I’ve written too much about my other activities. Last spring, I pledged Alpha Psi Omega, a national theatre honors society. I did a lot of theatre in high school, onstage and off, and I realized that most theatre people are the craziest, loudest, quirkiest, most amazing people you will ever meet. That’s definitely true of everyone in Alpha Psi.
This year, we’re working on spending more time together socially outside of meetings and other Alpha Psi events, and one way we’re doing that is by going to free pie night at Village Inn.
Everyone knows about Whitey’s, but Village Inn and its free pie Wednesdays are pretty underpublicized. Every Wednesday from 10 am to 10 pm, you get a free slice of pie with any purchase at Village Inn and a lot of Augie students take advantage of that because a) we’re college students and we’re pretty broke and b) everyone loves pie.
So every Wednesday of even-numbered weeks, we meet in the Centennial Hall parking lot at 8:15 pm. There are usually enough people with cars to drive everyone, and we leave around 8:30. Last night, we were a group of 18-20 people, so Village Inn took a little while to get all of our orders, but we were still back home by 10:30–just in time to do that last bit of homework (or start that first bit of homework), or, for the lucky ones like me, go to bed (or am I really lucky? I went to bed early because I have a class at 7:30 am on Thursdays).
It was awesome to just socialize with the other members of Alpha Psi, because I was so busy with Quidditch last year that I didn’t really get to know all of them. When that many like-minded people get together, you know you’re bound to have fun.
Free pie Wednesday wasn’t just about the pie (although if you go to Village Inn, I’d recommend the French silk since the lemon meringue is a little sweet for me), it was more about friendships and building lasting connections.
