It is no secret that diversity on campus is constantly increasing. Augie has a great program that they host every year for students who come from diverse backgrounds; it is the Multicultural Student Orientation. Last year I was fortunate to be invited to be a part of this orientation and I can honestly say that attending it was the best decision I could’ve ever made.
There were a ton of positives that came from it. For starters, I got to move in two days before the rest of the freshmen. By the time everyone got there I was already completely settled in. It was also nice to get acquainted with the campus a few days before classes began. But most importantly, it was at MCO that I met some of closest Augie friends, who I now consider family.
Having had such a great experience through MCO last year, I knew that I wanted to be part of it again this year as an ambassador. I applied at the end of last year and was lucky to have been chosen. Our ambassador duties began early in the morning on August 14th. We were to help the new “MCO Babies” move into their dorms. It was interesting to see the mix of emotions that all of the new freshmen were feeling because I clearly remember being in their shoes last year.
After they were all moved in it was time to get the day started. We started by having lunch together and introducing all of the ambassadors. After that we did a few ice breakers to get to know one another. Other activities included tours of campus and the Quad Cities, Question and Answer Sessions, an ice cream social, a Wal-Mart run, a water ski show, and many more.
Although we were all exhausted by the time MCO ended, I enjoyed it just as much as I did last year and would love to continue being a part of it in the coming years!
