It doesn’t matter how far we live from home.; we all get homesick at some point or another. At the beginning of the year I suffered from EXTREME home sickness. For some reason I was fine during the school week, but once the weekend came all I wanted to do was go home, which is exactly what I did!
I live a little over an hour away and have a car on campus which makes it easy for me to come and go. During the first 10 weeks I probably went home at least 6 or 7 times and when I wouldn’t go home my parents would come and see me. When I went home for fall break I realized things had to change. It just wasn’t right to be going home every weekend. Not only was I missing out on things that went on on-campus during the weekend but it was also time for me to grow up and not always depend on being around my parents.
I realized that the reason I always wanted to go home was because I got bored during the weekend and instead of finding something to do I would just leave. I told my friends about my theory and we made plans. We watched movies, went to the mall, and went to trivia night (sponsored by OSA). Such great memories were made that weekend! I had no idea what I had been missing out on! In the following weeks I started attending the late nights that are held on Saturday nights by various groups on campus. I had no idea there was so much to do on campus during the weekends! The next few weekends I will definitely be staying because Rush will starting.
I’m glad that my friends convinced me that it wasn’t right to go home so much. It’s a good thing I realized this when I did otherwise I would’ve missed out on many aspects of the college experience.
