A window inside life at Augustana College

Change I do believe in

Let me take you all back a while.  Actually, quite a while.  In fact, all the way back to September 1, 2007, the first day I set foot on the campus of Augustana College as a student.  I checked into Westerlin, got my key to my room, and walked into the door to drop off my stuff.  The room was empty except for me, so I went off to the Orientation events.  But before that, I decided to check out some other rooms on my floor, when I walk into one room that had two guys named Paul in it(one of them playing the mandolin), and a giant poster of John Lennnon.  After I go meet my Peer Mentor Beth, then my Orientation group and I proceed to while the rest of the day away.  At some point, I get back to my room and meet my roommates, Jason, Mark, and this kid from Nepal named Saroj.  The next day, I’m wandering around the at-this-point-still-nameless science building trying to find a discussion group, when I happen upon this girl named Tina who is trying to find the same thing I am.  As the weeks go by, I meet Shira, one of Jason’s friends from back home, her roommate Stephanie, as well as some more guys on my floor: Justin(through whom I meet Colleen, Lexi, and Bethany), Sean, Chris, Brian, and Brian.  Winter Term of my Freshman Year was the time when we all hung out the most, and it was a glorious time.  But then Spring came, and all of us pledged to different groups…

After that, I went into my Sophomore year, where I ran into some more things:  Phi Mu Alpha in all it’s glory, Homecoming the way it was meant to be celebrated, new classes, exploring my History major, and the like.  Of course, Junior Year didn’t have it’s dearth of scholastic and social events either… However, there could have been some improvement, but that’s all in the past anyway… Now we’re in my Senior Year, and there were several fun experiences, such as Homecoming again, going to Kansas(which I still plan to write an entry about…) and other things as well…

This is where we get to the motivation for this entry.  Just this last night, I was on the bus home from The District, when I found myself sitting right across from Bethany.  Then I got to thinking just how much has changed with myself and all of the people that I mentioned.  Both of the Pauls are now in the same Fraternity, and still buds.  Beth, my peer mentor, turned out to be a member of SAI, and when I pledged Phi Mu Alpha that ensuing spring, I realized she was in it, so we had some more memories shared before she graduated.  As to my roommates, Saroj and Mark both left after the end of Fall Term of our Freshman Year, and Jason ended up leaving school a year later.  Shira and Stephanie both ended up pledging sororities, and they’re doing well.  Justin is now a Senior and in a Fraternity.  Colleen, Lexi, and Bethany are all in the same Sorority, and Sean, Brian, and Brian are all in Fraternities.  Chris wound up being a CA, and so on and so forth.  My own path in those past 3 years has been so different. from how I started out, what with being in a Fraternity(not that I’m one of those people who said that I’d never be in a Fraternity, I just was never always assuming that I would, if that makes sense…) as well as being on the exec board of that group, being involved with RHA, and countless other experiences I’ve had…

But, as they say, the more things change, the more they stay the same.  As an example of this, just a few weeks back, I got a call from Justin to go hang out at his place.  That brought back so many memories of all the good times in our Freshman Year.  And that girl Tina who I met in the Science Building?  Well, 3 years later, not only is she still one of my friends, but she is now my news editor for the Observer.  In another flashback, next term I’m taking World Music, which will be the first time I have taken a class in the Music Department since I took Musicianship in the Fall Term of my Freshman Year.  I think the main point of this entry is, as I enter into less than 4 months until I graduate, I just want to take a look back at my years here and reflect.

One more thing.  I just registered for my classes for Spring Term, and I now know that on Friday, May 13 2011, I will be taking my final class as a college student, World Music.  It should be noted that 1,351 days earlier, on September 4, 2007, my first college class was another Music class, Musicianship…
