A window inside life at Augustana College

Hey!! My name is Alicia Oken and I’m currently a senior at Augustana. Originally I’m from Naperville, IL. I’m triple majoring in Political Science, Communication Studies and Multimedia Journalism. I’m very involved on campus with WAUG, the Augustana Observer, College Democrats, Student Government Association, Club Tennis and Sigma Alpha Iota. I also love pop in glass bottles, press pennis and gummy bears. I hope you’ll enjoy reading my blog!

How I shook the hand of President Obama and Michelle Obama

Today I got to shake the hand of the Commander-in-Chief aka the President of the United States! AND First Lady Michelle Obama! But back to the beginning…Last week Augustana College Democrats were given VIP tickets to his rally in East Davenport by a Davenport Field Organizer. I got an email that asked if Augustana College Democrats […]

Tips & tricks for your first year of college

I was going to blog about my internship, when I stumbled upon the freshman (okay, fine, first-year) summer connection blogs. Which prompted this blog post. I know when I was just entering Augustana, I looked online for anything that might have advice about how to survive my first year. Well, this is the culmination of […]

Augustana: Making the world a little bit smaller

Who do you run into when you are 932 miles away from Augustana? Your communications advisor of course! To start off my summer, I visited friends I made in DC last year. We traveled from DC to Maryland to Pennsylvania to Delaware. While we were in visiting Philadelphia for the day, I met up with […]

“So much of me is made from what I learned from you”

“I’ve heard it said that people come into our lives for a reason/Bringing something we must learn/And we are led to those who help us most to grow if we let them/And we help them in return/Well, I don’t know if I believe that’s true/But I know I’m who I am today/Because I knew you…” […]

Top 5 reasons I love WAUG

This is probably my second to last post before I head off for the summer, which makes me really sad. As promised though, here is my top five reasons I love being involved with WAUG: 1) You will always know someone who is just as stoked as you are that your favorite band just came […]

Sigma Alpha Iota formal

I always told myself I wouldn’t join anything with greek letters, yet I honestly wouldn’t be the same person I am today without […]

Top 5 reasons I love the Augustana Observer

1) As you can tell from this picture, we are a crazy group of kids. I honestly didn’t know what I was getting into when I said I’d be the opinions editor but I don’t regret it for a second. 2) You get to meet some really cool people, both within and outside the office. […]

Gearing up for senior year!

It’s not often when you look at your life and are fairly happy with the way things are going. At this point in time though, I am stoked for my summer and my senior year! Here are a few reasons why: I am interning with WGN Radio this summer. Considering 50 people applied, I could […]

A fruit basket of thoughts

So I couldn’t figure just one topic for this post to be about, so I decided to combine all my posts into one! This past Friday, I was able to be a moderator for the Student Government presidential debate. There are three candidates and this has been one of the most intense races I have […]
