Hey!! My name is Alicia Oken and I’m currently a senior at Augustana. Originally I’m from Naperville, IL. I’m triple majoring in Political Science, Communication Studies and Multimedia Journalism. I’m very involved on campus with WAUG, the Augustana Observer, College Democrats, Student Government Association, Club Tennis and Sigma Alpha Iota. I also love pop in glass bottles, press pennis and gummy bears. I hope you’ll enjoy reading my blog!
I graduated!
I’m officially an alumni of Augustana College! It’s weird because I think it hasn’t completely sunk in yet. I just wanted to thank all my professors, family, friends and especially my parents for getting me to this point in my life. I couldn’t have gotten to this point in my life without all of them [...]

Officially done with undergraduate classes!
Only a final reflection paper and a portfolio separate me from graduation! It’s hard to believe that I will no longer be attending classes at Augustana College. Here is a list of “lasts” I’ve had to endure these past few weeks: Last Observer page layout and get-together Last oboe lesson Last WAUG show Last SGA meeting Last day [...]

The best weekend ever pt. 2 (Why I should have joined Martini Swingers sooner)
Friday night my friend Sarah and I drove to a concert in Hoffman Estates to see You Me at Six, Mayday Parade, Pierce the Veil and All Time Low (Make sure to check out the YouTube videos that are linked!). It was an incredible concert and I had the best time ever! There’s just something about [...]

The best weekend of my four years at Augie
I had the best weekend of my whole entire life this weekend. There were so many hugs and smiles and friends. To say it was magical would be an understatement. It basically started on Wednesday night when my friends and I went out to dinner at Blue Cat and then sang karaoke. I also registered [...]

I have chosen a graduate school!
After much contemplation, pro/cons lists, and numerous restless nights, I have officially chosen which graduate school I will be attending in the fall. From previous blog posts, you might remember that I had to choose between Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and Columbia University in New York. They are both two fantastic schools, I just [...]

Visit to Washington, D.C. and New York
I’m finally getting around to my blog post about my visit to Washington, D.C. and New York. Let’s just say it was amazing! On my trip I visited Georgetown University and American University in Washington, D.C. and Columbia University in New York, which are the three graduate schools I got into for journalism. I’d never [...]

Sigma Alpha Iota’s Province Day
The Delta Tau chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota spent at least ten hours together two weekends ago. And let me tell you, it was fantastic! First on Friday we had a sisterhood retreat. We made some crafts, sang some songs, and did “warm fuzzies.” Warm fuzzies are definitely my favorite part of the sisterhood retreats! [...]

Research conference at the University of Oklahoma
Sorry for taking so long to blog about my conference! It’s been hectic ever since I got back. First of all, more exciting news – I got accepted at Columbia University’s grad school! While I’m super excited to be accepted there, it’s going to make my choice a lot harder. But my parents are wonderful [...]

Spring Break – Fall Out Boy, Florida & Georgetown
So my last first day at Augustana happened today – it’s a little bittersweet. But the last first day was on the heels of a fantastic Spring Break! Some highlights include: Meeting Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy! He came to Anderson’s Bookshop because he recently released a book. They have really famous authors who [...]

I’m a survivor
Destiny’s Child once said: “I’m a survivor/I’m not gon give up.” That was my motto for winter term and let me tell you – I’m a survivor. Somehow I managed to complete 86+ pages for my political science and communication studies senior inquiry papers. This was on top of another 20ish pages for another class. [...]
