Bahls to serve in NCAA and CCIW roles
Augustana College President Steven Bahls was recently named to the NCAA Division III Presidents/Chancellors Advisory Group, and he was appointed chair of the President’s Council of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW).
For President Bahls, service to these groups illustrates his support of the student-athletes that have created and maintained Augustana’s distinction as a national Academic All-American leader and a leader within the conference.
Augustana ranks No. 1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) for Academic All-Americans, No. 2 in Division III athletics and No. 6 in the nation.
President Bahls said, “At Augustana, athletics is one way students can get involved. But more than that, it’s a way Augustana students are prepared to stand out in life. The preparation they receive as student-athletes prepares them for the workplace and their futures.”
The Division III Presidents/Chancellors Advisory Group was established in response to the desire of the Division III Presidents Council to more directly and effectively engage presidents and chancellors in governance discussions at the national, conference and institutional levels, and the CCIW Council of Presidents has ultimate authority for decisions within the conference, including budgets and determining the sports sponsored by the conference.
“Student-athletes are an important part of the Augustana tradition, so it is particularly gratifying for me to have leadership positions within the CCIW and the NCAA.” President Bahls added, “Division III athletes are truly student-athletes who excel in both the classroom and in in their sport.”
Augustana has 12 men’s and 11 women’s varsity teams, as well as many intramural and recreational athletic programs.
A charter member of the CCIW, the Vikings have won 174 CCIW team championships – more than any other school in the league – and four NCAA Division III team championships, and have qualified more than 250 teams for national competition.
Augustana’s role as an Academic All-American leader ties closely with the college’s strategic plan, Authentically Augustana: Affirm our Mission, Assure our Future and Assess our Results, by helping the college advance its reputation as a premier college of the liberal arts and sciences.
President Bahls is preceded by others at Augustana who have served in NCAA leadership roles. The following individuals are among those who are currently or have represented Augustana on NCAA committees and/or groups:
