"A Good Ambassador"
Carol J. Carlson and the John Matthew Carlson Accounting Office
Between the Depression and the war years, my husband John and I were never able to take full advantage of higher education. After his discharge from the army, we returned to our hometown of Moline. He took night courses in accounting at Augustana College and continued his career with Deere and Company, a career that lasted more than 47 years. Throughout his lifetime, John was a good ambassador for his company, church and community, and I have chosen
to continue these relationships by “giving back” in his name. One example is the endowed John Matthew Carlson Accounting Scholarship at Augustana College.
Now I have witnessed the good growth at Augustana in recent years, much of it related to the goals of Authentically Augustana: A Call to Action, and I am very impressed. What really inspired me to support the campaign was seeing my husband’s interests converge in the new academic center of Emmy Carlsson Evald Hall. There in that great hall is the Deere and Company Accounting Suite. I saw a wonderful opportunity in that partnership, and chose to name the John Matthew Carlson Accounting Office after my husband.
John would be thrilled with this action on my part. A lifelong learner, I was brought up by parents who nurtured my passion for reading and introduced me to the world through museums, cultural events and the public library. Through the years, John and I sang Messiah with the Handel Oratorio Society and counted many Augustana employees among our friends and acquaintances. I am very pleased with the advances I have seen at Augustana lately, even as I continue to recognize the college I have known since Evald Hall was the W.B. — and I am glad to demonstrate this friendship and connection through Authentically Augustana: A Call to Action.
