A Call to Action featured project: Emmy Carlsson Evald Hall
The beginning of the 2008-09 academic year at Augustana also begins a new era for an historical building on campus. With the transformation of Carlsson Hall from a student residence to a major academic building, we have realized the second goal for the capital project component of Authentically Augustana: A Call to Action.
Our next project, the renovation and refurbishing of Old Main, will be the campaign’s focus in the important months to come. Meanwhile, we pause to revel in and celebrate the successful completion of this goal—so closely linked to our campaign’s primary goal of enhancing the college’s academic program—at a dedication ceremony for the re-named Emmy Carlsson Evald Hall on October 2. (See related story).
The architectural firm BLDD Architects, Inc. maintained the classic lines and exterior detail of this 1920s-era dormitory, and also reconfigured the building’s interior to include technologically advanced classrooms, seminar halls, computer and psychology labs, office suites and project/study areas—all for five highly populated departments formerly located in the more isolated Sorensen Hall. In late August, the departments of accounting, business administration, economics, education and psychology welcomed students into their new facilities.
Along with smart classrooms and study areas equipped for the close focus of modern students, the building includes some elegant gathering spaces—a Great Hall and large terrace that opens out toward Ericson Field. Emmy Carlsson Evald Hall also is home to three programs that perform valuable functions of the college’s mission: the Office of International Programs; the Center for Vocational Reflection; and a new program, Augie Choice, which will provide a funding incentive for individual students planning to further customize their educational paths.
The strategy behind the building’s restructuring is tied to the primary goal of the college’s strategic plan: to enhance our outstanding academic program and promote the work of students as they collaborate with peers and mentors—especially within Senior Inquiry. Facing Old Main across Seventh Avenue and heading the main corridor into central campus, Evald Hall and its five disciplines will benefit from the academic synergy realized by this new location. Bringing psychology, education and the business fields nearer to the traditional seat of the humanities in Old Main will reinforce the cross-disciplinary learning and creative, critical thinking that are hallmarks of an Augustana education.

Today, more opportunities for naming of classrooms, seminar halls or administrative suites exist within this stunning building that bears its family name into a new generation. Think of the legacy in a name, and the enduring commitment it demonstrates to all who pursue their educational goals within its reach. Then consider making a gift that sets your family name in this hall of learning.
