Old Main in its Early Glory

Engraved by E.A. Wright, Philadelphia, prior to 1910

Old Main has reigned as the signature building on Augustana's campus since the late 1880s. It's when alumni see its dome that many feel they're truly home again. Old Main was based on a similar structure at Sweden's University of Uppsala, the alma mater of many of Augustana's early faculty. But after reviewing the architect's initial plans, at least one member of the building committee expressed his wish to add a dome because Americans would expect one. Another architect revised the design to include a dome, and gave Augustana a building for the ages.
