Record flooding in the spring of 1965 prompted Augustana President Dr. Clarence Woodrow Sorensen to cancel classes so students and faculty could help with sandbagging efforts. Hundreds from the Augustana community joined Quad Cities residents to move sandbags and build walls to hold back the Mighty Mississippi and the Rock River.

In this photo, from left: faculty members Erwin Weber, Ted Kessinger and Steven May take a break from sandbagging, along with Pamela Edelmann '65 and Marjorie Nelson '65. "I remember that occasion very well, and Marge and I are still good friends after 44 years," says Pam Edelmann '65 Sall. "I don't remember there even being a question about helping. Believe it or not, we had a blast doing the sandbagging. We got a chance to work with some of our professors and coaches side-by-side as well as many people from the Quad Cities. Of course we were all younger and stronger back then, but I bet Margie could still do it!"
