"Art is not a mirror to reflect reality, but a hammer with which to shape it." —Bertolt Brecht

A degree in Theatre at Augustana encourages student involvement both on-stage and behind-the-scenes. Early courses include acting, technical production, history and design. Advanced courses focus on set design, advanced performance techniques, costume construction and directing. Each year, three main stage plays are produced, along with a student-directed short play festival during winter term. Studies in Theatre enhance skills in interpersonal communication, group problem-solving, artistic expression, creative thinking, organization and leadership.

"I got into the Theatre department by taking the introduction classes for prerequisites, and never stopped taking the classes. Next thing I knew I was getting involved in the major productions, and theatre was all I wanted to do. Then I figured out how I could squeeze a theatre major into my schedule, and sure enough everything worked out."  —Sarah Nutt

"Augustana doesn't have a huge theatre department, but this is what I love about it. I have been lucky to do so many things—from directing, to set design, to acting, to set construction—both on stage and off. These are opportunities that a lot of undergrads don't get at other schools."  —Corinne Veverka
