Hong Kong Exchange Program (annual)
Applications for all exchanges are open Nov. 1 - Jan. 15
Study in Hong Kong on an Augustana exchange with Lingnan University
Augustana College has a longstanding relationship with Lingnan University, Hong Kong's Liberal Arts College. Located in one of Asia's most dynamic and cosmopolitan cultural and economic hubs, Lingnan University offers students in any major the chance to expand their horizons and immerse themselves in Asian culture.
Coursework is available in both English and Mandarin. Students who opt for a one-semester program will be off campus for an entire term as well as half of our Winter trimester, but may elect to take courses on campus in Rock Island for the other half of the Winter Term.
Eligibility: This program is open to all students in their sophomore year or later with a GPA of 2.50. It is open to any major, and recommended for students of Business, International Business, Economics, Chinese and Asian Studies. Students should consult with their academic advisors before application to ensure that the program will fit with their other academic goals. Courses must be pre-approved before the student leaves for Hong Kong. All students must be approved by both Augustana and Lingnan University and must apply for a visa to study in Hong Kong.
Academics: The expansive catalog of Lingnan University is at your disposal. It is recommended that students study Mandarin Chinese as part of their program, but may also take courses in a wide range of fields in English. All courses must be pre-approved and it is up to each Augustana department to determine the course equivalency. Learning perspectives will be granted based upon the Augustana course equivalencies. Coursework is available in multiple fields, including:
Accounting - Business Administration - Chinese Language & Literature - Cultural Studies - Economics
Environmental Studies - Finance - History - Languages - Philosophy - Political Science - Psychology - Sociology
Students on this, or any exchange program, must receive a grade of C or higher in coursework in order for the course to be accepted for Augustana credit.
Calendar: Lingnan University operates on a semester system, so Augustana students should expect to be in Hong Kong for the equivalent of either 1) All of Fall Term and the December portion of Winter Term, or 2) The Jan-Feb portion of Winter Term and all of Spring Term. Lingnan University's semesters run from late August through mid-December and from mid-January through May. Students who participate in the semester program should expect to take 12-15 credits during the program and to enroll in 3-6 credits of coursework in either the December or Jan-Feb 5-week module format at Augustana, allowing them to complete equivalent credits to two trimesters at Augustana (a total of 6 courses or 18 credits.)
Cost: Students will pay standard Augustana tuition, room charges and fees for the time they are abroad. Payments are made on the standard schedule for the Fall, Winter and/or Spring trimesters.
Cost includes: The payments made to Augustana College cover tuition while in Hong Kong as well as accomodation in the International Residence Hall on the campus of Lingnan University.
Cost does not include: Airfare, ground transportation, health insurance, discretionary spending or meals while attending Lingnan University. Student accomodations provide shared kitchen facilities to help reduce the cost of meals while in Hong Kong.
Financial Aid: Students participating in an exchange program are eligible for the same financial aid they would receive were they on campus in Illinois. This includes grants, scholarships and loan eligibility, but not work-study arrangements. This program is Augie Choice and IOP Grant eligible. The $1,000 IOP Grants are competitive and limited in number.
Freistat Grants: If a student chooses to earn at least 6 credits of their coursework in the host country language while participating in an exchange program (Germany, Hong Kong, Japan or Sweden), they may also apply for a Freistat Grant for Language Immersion. This grant can be $2,000 or more towards the cost of the terms abroad. It requires that at least 6 credits of coursework be either language study or courses taught in the host country's language (other than English). For more information on the Freistat Grant, please visit this website.
Augie Choice: Exchange programs are Augie Choice eligible for students who have completed 6 terms or 60 credits at Augustana prior to departure. Transfer students who have completed 3 terms or 30 credits at Augustana prior to departure are also eligible for Augie Choice grants.
Application process: Students should apply for both Fall or Spring semester programs by the January deadline in the year prior to their planned study at Lingnan University. If there remain open slots in the program, applications for the Spring semester may extend to August of the same year.
Once approved by Augustana, students must also apply to Lingnan University for approval and must seek the appropriate student visa. Augustana's International & Off-Campus Programs office, along with the International Student Office at Lingnan University, will assist students with the admissions, course approval and student visa processes.

Why an exchange program might be right for you?
Are you an independent person, willing to challenge yourself in a new educational environment? Do you want intensive language study, or perhaps you want to really get to know a new part of the world? Do you want an authentic experience in an international university? Whether for a term, a semester or a year, exchange programs are perfect for students who want to experience what life and what college is like around the world. An exchange lets you go deeper into the host culture than you will if you travel with a large group of Augie students, and it gives you the ability to take classes with native students.
Add to this the fact that because you pay Augie tuition, exchange program courses are not transfer credits, and can count towards your graduation requirements. Also, in many cases exchange programs represent the least expensive programs available, since you are paying Augustana tuition, room or room & board, rather than paying both for tuition and for program costs of an Augie group program.
It takes an adventurous, self-confident and motivated student to truly get the most out of an exchange program, but if you are excited by the idea of living, studying and experiencing another culture without the "Augie bubble", exchanges might be just what you are looking for.
