Carl B. Nelson Music Education Scholarships
One at $20,000 each ($5,000 annually) -for students planning to major in music education.

Audition Dates: February 8-9, 2008
All materials for Honors Music Scholarship Weekend are due at the Department of Music no later than January 8, 2008. (The Honors Music weekend is for the Diesenroth, Morgan, Carl B. Nelson, Swanson and the Augustana Honors Scholarships.)

Honors Music Scholarship Procedures

Application - Please submit the Music Scholarship Application for Audition no later than January 8, 2008.  Your general application for admission to Augustana College should be complete by the audition date. Fill out an online application here...

Preliminary Recording - Audition material should include approximately 8-10 minutes of music, following the audition guidelines below. Cds and tapes accepted-no videos or emailed mp3 files. Due January 8, 2008.

Instrumentalists - Prepare one movement of a suite, sonata, or concerto, and a work in a contrasting style. An etude may be substituted for one of the above.

Vocalists - Prepare two or three songs in contrasting style, preferably one in a foreign language.  Memorization is recommended.  A short vocal exercise also will be required.

Notification - After review of the tapes and application materials, approximately 20 students will be invited to audition on campus on February 8-9, 2008.   Finalists will be expected to attend both audition dates.

Carl B. Nelson Music Education Scholarship Procedure:

Application - Please submit the Music Scholarship Application for Audition no later than January 8, 2008. Students must have a high school g.p.a. of at least 3.0 and intend to major in music. Preliminary Audition Tape - Audition tape material should include 8-10 minutes of music, following the audition guidelines found in the Honors Scholarship procedure. Cds and tapes accepted-no videos or emailed mp3 files. Due January 8, 2008.

**Letter of Recommendation**- Include a brief letter from a reference in the profession of music or education. Due January 8.

Audition - After review of the tapes and application materials, finalists will be invited to audition on campus February 8-9, 2008.

Interview - An interview with the music education scholarship committee. The interview will be scheduled to correspond with music scholarship audition date and time.

Notification - Applicants will receive detailed information by email concerning their audition time approximately two weeks before the audition.  Accompanists will be provided for vocal auditions only.  Audition materials should follow the guidelines below.  

Instrumentalists - One movement of a suite, sonata, or concerto, and a work in a contrasting style, no more than 8 minutes total. An etude may be substituted for one of the above. Sightreading will be required, scales may be required. You may perform without accompaniment or provide your own accompanist.

Vocalists - Two songs in contrasting style, preferably one in a foreign language, no more than 6 minutes total. Songs should be in a style appropriate for contests and should be memorized. A short vocal exercise and sightreading also will be required. An accompanist will be provided.
