MU 401 Seminar: Topics in Music (3)
Intensive investigation and examination of one particular music problem, genre, composer or period. May also include multi-cultural or interdisciplinary aspects as they affect the topic studies. The subject as well as the faculty will vary from year to year. Students may then repeat the course if the topic has changed. Prerequisite: two years of musicianship and at least two 300-level music history courses, or permission of instructor.
MU 405 [FA] Seminar in Church Music (3)
Principles underlying worship, the liturgical year, the great liturgies, styles of worship, instruments in the service, the professional church musician, church music methods and administration. (Offered in alternate years.)
ME 410 Junior/Senior Capstone (1)
A two-term sequence, with grade of IP for successful completion of the initial term. Initial term consists of a discussion-based class with topics comprising the various angles from which music can be viewed. Under the direction of the class teacher and a member of the music faculty the student will research and write a summary document which represents their reading and critical reection, to be submitted and defended in the ensuing term.
MU 412 Seminar in Jazz Arranging and Composition (1+)
Advanced study in the harmonic vocabulary of the jazz idiom; arranging techniques for large and small jazz ensembles. May be repeated, 2 credits maximum.

ME 120 Basic Vocal Techniques (1)
Topics relating to the instruction of the young and/or inexperienced singer, primarily in the classroom situation, including experiences through classroom lecture/discussion and laboratory settings to help build an awareness of one's own voice. Introduction to major concerns of those who lead in the act of singing.
ME 121 Basic Instrumental Techniques (1)
Investigation of topics relating to the function and capabilities of musical instruments and the appropriate uses of these instruments.
ME 280 Introduction to Music Education (1)
Overview of the foundations, principles and methods of K-12 music teaching. Screening of degree candidates is built into the course along with 10 hours of clinical and field experiences. Lab sessions weekly.
ME 381 Elementary Music Teaching Methods (3)
Designed to afford classroom teachers the opportunity to develop individual musical skills in creativity, performance and listening as a means of enhancing teaching through the use of music. Emphasis is on principles, methods and materials for elementary music instruction. Required for elementary education majors. One weekly lab session required of students with limited musical background. Not open to music majors.
ME 384 Marching Band Methods and Materials (1)
Current practices in the organization, management and techniques of the secondary school marching band. Experiences include class discussion, hands-on projects and site-based individual experiences with school bands.
ME 385 Jazz Methods (1)
Foundations course in jazz education. Covers rehearsal tech-niques, performance conventions, chord symbol interpretation for both solo improvisation and the rhythm section, the role of the drum set and literature.
ME 386 Methods and Materials for Teaching Music in the Elementary School (3)
Principles, methods and materials for teaching general, vocal and instrumental music in the elementary school. Required of music education majors. 30 hours of clinical and field experiences. Prerequisite 280. Lab sessions weekly.
ME 387 Methods and Materials for Teaching Music in the Middle and Secondary School (3)
Procedures for teaching music in the middle and secondary schools, as well as philosophy and principles of both middle and secondary school music curriculum design. Emphasis on organization, administration and pedagogy for vocal and instrumental ensemble instruction as well as principles and procedures for general music classroom instruction and music technology. Required for all music education majors. 30 hours of clinical and field experiences. Prerequisite: 386. Lab sessions weekly.

389 Internship: Analysis (3+, limit of 3 to count toward graduation)
Analysis of the background, structure and policy issues in the sponsoring organization. During the academic year this course must be taken concurrently with Internship 388 and 389.
