6 credits from 100-level history courses
3 credits from 200 (Gateway: Introduction to Historical Research)
6 credits devoted to 481 (Senior Inquiry: Research Seminar) and 482 (Senior Inquiry: Research Tutorial)
15 additional or “elective” credits in history, 12 of which must be at the 300/400 level. Unless permission of the instructor is given, all 300- and 400-level courses have a pre-requisite of any 100-level course. Students are strongly recommended to take 200 before taking any 300-or 400-level courses. Instructors may specify that certain of their upper-level courses have 200 as a prerequisite, unless permission of the instructor is given.

Additional Requirements:
o Students in Plan 1 must take at least two 3-credit courses centered on topics in African, Asian, and/or Latin American history.
o Students in Plan 1 must take at least one 3-credit “skills and methods” course (Oral History, Public History, Historiography, or Internship).
o Students in Plan 1 must take at least two 3-credit courses centered on topics before 1800.


Plan 2—the Teaching History Major
36 credits distributed as follows:

9 credits in U.S. history (6 must be from 130, 131, 132; at least 3 must be from a 300-level U.S. history course concentrating on a time period from the unselected 100-level course, meaning either 331; 373 or 335; or 334 or 338)
9 credits in European history (3 from 110 or 111; 3 from 112 or 113; 3 from 390 (when a European topic), 310, 311, 312, 315, 346)
12 additional credits (3 from 150 or 151; 3 from 305 or 306; 3 from 371; 3 from 120, 121, 140, 141, 330, or 348)
3 credits from 200
3 credits from 490 (Senior Inquiry: History Teaching and Learning); may substitute with 481/482 sequence or 450/451 sequence)

Plan 3—Honors:
33 credits

Plan 3 is designed for students who intend to go to graduate school in history, or simply desire a more challenging program. The requirements are the same as for Plan 1, with the following additional requirements:
o Honors majors must show proficiency in a foreign language, either by taking a language through 203 or demonstrating the equivalent result in a language exam taken in the sophomore, junior, or senior year.
o Honors majors must take an additional 3-credit 300-level course, for a total of 33 credits for the major.
o Honors students must take 450/451 for their Senior Inquiry project, unless the department approves an interdisciplinary Honors project.


THE MINOR IN HISTORY

18 credits, distributed as follows
6 credits from 100-level history courses
3 credits from History 200
9 credits from 300- and 400-level history courses
