Studying in Germany

Augustana students have the option of studying at universities in Eichstätt, Passau, Regensburg, or on the fall term program in Wittenberg.

Map of Germany

Eichstätt

Eichstätt is a beautiful, small town located in the heart of Bavaria. It has a lovely private (Catholic) university and many quaint cafes and churches.

The Eichstätt Summer Program gives students the opportunity to study in Germany for four weeks during the summer break, from mid-July to mid-August. The program offers different levels of German depending on the skill levels of the participants. Summer school participants are enrolled in courses with students from all over the world. Students take two courses and receive six credits. Visit the Eichstätt Summer Program website.

Students who have completed two years of college German are eligible to study for one or two semesters at the University of Eichstätt, where they take classes, learn about German culture, and can explore Germany, Austria, and other countries in Europe. Students study side-by-side with native Germans. Students live in university dormitories where they have single rooms with a full bathroom and kitchen privileges.

Passau

Passau is a picturesque town in eastern Bavaria on the German-Austrian border and just a few kilometers from the Czech Republic. Situated on the confluence of three rivers, the Danube, the Inn, and the Ilz, the important Medieval-era town of Passau now is home to a renowned university, small businesses, and a thriving tourist industry.

Students with any level of German ability — even no German language experience — are eligible to study for one or two semesters at the University of Passau, where they take classes, learn about German culture, and can explore Germany, Austria, and other countries in Europe. Students enroll in the courses offered to Passau University students and study side by side with native Germans and other foreign students. Students live in university dormitories where they have single rooms with a full bathroom and kitchen privileges.

Regensburg

Regensburg is a beautiful town in eastern Bavaria. It has a newer university and a long and interesting history.

Students with any level of German ability — even no German language experience — are eligible to study for one or two semesters at the University of Regensburg, where they take classes, learn about German culture, and can explore Germany, Austria, and other countries in Europe. Students enroll in the courses offered to Regensburg University students and study side by side with German students and foreign students. Students live in university dormitories where they have single rooms with a full bathroom and kitchen privileges.

Wittenberg

Wittenberg, located in northeast Germany in the area of the former German Democratic Republic, is a lovely historical city, made famous by its close connection with Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation. The old city is full of architectural treasures, many dating from the Renaissance. Many well-known scholars studied in Wittenberg, and even Hamlet is said to have studied there.

Students who have completed two years of college German are eligible to participate in the fall term program in Wittenberg. Students are accompanied by one Augustana faculty member, and will take at least 8 credits of coursework. Most classes will be taught by faculty from the area. Students will stay for the most part with Wittenberg families, providing them the opportunity to become more familiar with German culture and the German language.
